Job Title: Earthworks Package Manager Location: C1 North: South Heath Cutting (Buckinghamshire) Department: Earthworks Reporting to: Project Manager Purpose of the job The Earthworks Package Manager will run the Earthworks site engineering team and take direct responsibility for sections of the C1 North scope of works. The Align opportunity The construction of the Chiltern tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct are two of the most eye-catching and challenging engineering projects on the HS2 route. Align is the joint venture created to achieve this task – we've created one integrated team of specialists from three partners with global reputations: Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick and Sir Robert McAlpine. In early 2024 Align was awarded an additional section of the route that was originally part of the C2 package, known as the South Heath Cutting, it represents 2km of high-speed rail infrastructure works including earthworks, drainage and 2 bridges. Responsibilities Assist the site management team to manage sections of the work/specific sub-contract packages. High standards for implementing safety, quality and environmental control including writing and/or reviewing detailed complex method statements, site specific inductions and associated paperwork. Good knowledge of construction outputs Thorough construction knowledge to allow detailed sequencing of works activities Ability to interrogate and extract 3D design information to communicate key information to stakeholders. Assist in the procurement sub-contractors and suppliers Managing parts of the cost plan Chairing meetings with the Client, Designer, Sub-contractor, Supplier and 3rd parties. Liaise with the client representative and designers over design issues/changes. Programme to completion and in line with the project targets Production of realistically resourced reconstruction, including earthworks quantities and methodologies. Allocate small sections of the programme to engineering staff for them to manually produce detailed programmes showing daily targets. Prepare fortnightly construction programmes drawn from the master section programme. Be aware of the financial targets for the section of works and have regular update meetings with the commercial team to review costs. Involve sub-contractors in the planning process and incorporate their detailed plans into the section plan. Co-ordinate operationally with the other section leaders Monitor the section performance, update progress and feedback Carry out checks for quality in accordance with the inspection and test plan throughout the contract and duly record. Review paperwork, method statements, permits licences etc. are in place for planned work. Regular planning meetings with team to debrief previous work, review future work, discuss what if’s. Review meetings with Project Manager/ Agent and QS to discuss events, which have caused delay and/or disruption. Skills & Experience The post holder will be educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically an Engineering discipline. A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a technical engineering role can be demonstrated. Demonstrable previous relevant experience within construction engineering, including Earthworks, Ground stabilisation and deep drainage. Experience of managing or assisting with the management of programmes of work, ensuring the project runs to schedule Experience in managing or assisting with the management on site, monitoring, dealing with subcontractors and finding solutions to problems that may cause delays or extra costs. Experience leading or assisting with the leadership of site teams and mentoring them to help built a solid project team. Knowledge of the development and implementation of quality management.
