Job overview
We are in the fourth year of offering these exciting and innovative Clinical Teaching Fellow post with a primary focus on Undergraduate Medical Education, and to support the successful candidates in obtaining a recognised teaching qualification, PGCert through the University of Sussex. The posts will be managed within the Unscheduled Care directorate with posts available in Emergency Department and Acute Medicine.
You will be part of the Emergency Medicine team, working a 45-46.5 hours week (depending on rota appointed to) split up to 50/50, Clinical and Education – with a full commitment to out-of-hours work.
You will be responsible for the Medical Students in our departments, you will welcome them as they start their placements, ensure that they are on track with their assessments, support them with bed-side teaching and offer support if needed. You will support the delivery of focussed small group discussion sessions during BSMS Year 5 FY0 7 weeks clinical placement on a Friday morning in March and April. This teaching is planned and supported by the BSMS curriculum management board and resources and training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant must be comfortable assessing and initiating management of cases presenting to the department, and will be encouraged to develop team leadership skills, with supervision. It is expected the post holders will act as role models for medical students and will have excellent communication skills and initiative.
The rota is a full shift rota and the postholder will fulfil the out-of-hours commitments as per the rota. The Clinical Fellow post-holder will work a semi-self-rostering system which would involve weekend and night shift working. This ensures that candidates can organize their lives and make space for family, leisure or other commitments to suit themselves.
The post-holder is required to participate in the Trust appraisal process and work towards meeting identified development needs.
The post-holder is required to demonstrate on-going continuous professional development.
The post-holder accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable with his/her colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the profession and the department that while additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Person specification
Experience/ Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* Evidence of commitment to and interest in education
Clinical Skills and Experience
* Minimum 6 months Emergency Medicine experience and 1 year of relevant acute specialities (including Acute Medicine / Paediatrics / Surgery or similar)
* Experience of working in NHS acute hospitals, or a further year of Emergency Medicine or equivalent where undifferentiated acutely unwell patients are managed
Organisation and Planning
* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
* Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
Teaching Skills
* Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
* Recognised teaching qualification
