JOB DESCRIPTION: School Caretaker
REPORTS TO: School Business Manager / Head Teacher
EVALUATED GRADE: Surrey Pay Grade SP3
JOB PURPOSE
The caretaker is responsible to the School Business Manager (SBM) and Headteacher of the school for the upkeep of the school premises, providing a safe, clean, and warm environment for all site users and visitors.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Security
o Ensure gates and entrances are kept clear and that fire doors are kept shut.
o Ensure that site keys are kept in a safe place.
o Ensure that gates and padlocks are secure, changing codes and replacing padlocks as necessary.
o Attend emergency call outs to premises as appropriate.
o Test fire alarms on a weekly basis.
2. Maintenance
o Take responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the premises, including buildings, fixtures, fittings, and furniture.
o Carry out minor repairs.
o Report defects to SBM.
o Use official order forms for any repairs/works following authorisation from the SBM.
o Engage in preventative maintenance to eliminate potential hazards.
o Perform general gardening duties, e.g., weeding, cutting back hedges, maintaining shrubs, planters, and hanging baskets.
o Ensure hard surface areas or grounds are weeded and any protruding low-level bushes are cut back; organise the cutting back of trees by authorised contractors.
o Monitor plumbing and drainage, unblocking drains, sinks, and gutters where possible.
o Check and replace lamps/tubes in light fittings.
o Under the instruction of the SBM, carry out minor decorating jobs.
o Operate heating plant to maintain required temperatures. Carry out frost precaution procedures as necessary.
o Carry out routine checks of fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and emergency lighting.
o Perform monthly meter readings.
o Complete any other procedures required to ensure the school site is kept in a good state of repair.
3. Health and Safety
o Maintain a safe and healthy environment, referring all hazards to the nominated health and safety officer at the establishment.
o Carry out regular site inspections and risk assessments of the school site.
o Have knowledge of use and maintenance of fire precautions and equipment.
o Clear ice and snow, putting down salt to give access and egress to site, making sure adequate supplies are available in time for winter.
o Clean up bodily fluids when on duty.
o Investigate and report all serious accidents and potential hazards involving staff or plant.
o Keep a log of Hazardous Waste disposal/removals and arrange collections by approved contractors.
o Assist the SBM in ensuring that all contractors working on site follow health and safety guidelines.
4. Cleaning Management
o Perform internal and external cleaning duties as required.
o Monitor toilet/wash areas at regular intervals ensuring adequate toilet rolls, hand towels, and soap are available.
5. General Duties
o Sweep playgrounds, hose down play areas, clear litter, debris, and leaves, and empty outdoor bins regularly.
o Oversee and co-ordinate deliveries of stock, supplies, etc., to correct storage site.
o D.I.Y within capabilities.
o Attend training courses or sessions as necessary to benefit the performance of duty.
o Move furniture where necessary and transfer goods and materials delivered to the school to required locations.
o Check supplies of cleaning and hygiene products and replace and reorder as required.
o Carry out any other reasonable requests as directed by the HT/SBM.
6. Extended Services
o Ensure that premises are maintained safely throughout the extended offer and that all users are aware of health and safety guidance and policies.
o Set up chairs/tables or equipment as requested.
o Report any issues to the SBM and provide regular feedback.
o Open and lock gates, doors, and windows, as appropriate.
o Ensure that all users sign in/out.
o Activate/deactivate the intruder alarm system.
o Liaise with hall and pitch hirers as necessary regarding site and security.

Essential (Must) Desirable (Should) Advantageous (Could)
* Experience of managing facilities and/or maintenance environment.
* Handy person/DIY skills.
* Qualifications in a skilled trade (e.g., plumbing).
* Experience of IT packages including Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of Health & Safety, hygiene procedures, and precautions.
* Aware of COSHH regulations.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent
Pay: £1,065.00-£1,147.00 per year
