We have an exciting opportunity to oversee long-term strategies and procedures for processing, managing and curating the large and diverse amount of data acquired by UK Biobank. To support the Lead Data Analyst and support the Data Analyst Team to maintain, document, interrogate and resolve issues and challenges associated with the data sets and the associated analytic approaches and algorithms. The key responsibilities are; Line management responsibility for members of the Data Analyst team. This includes day-to-day task assignment and workload scheduling as well as performance monitoring, training and staff development. The design, development and enhancement of systems and/or processes to facilitate storage, processing and transfer of large amounts of data. Developing and implementing processes to clean, validate and refine large amounts of data from a variety of sources for inclusion in the UK Biobank resource to ensure data are error-free, consistent and well-documented. Documenting and maintaining records of all changes to the UK Biobank resource and associated processes in a well-structured manner. Producing technical reports on data management and procedures, including the cataloguing and curation of datasets. Exploring and advising on IT and data management tools and methods for handling large and complex datasets. Designing and leading training sessions and providing guidance to external researchers on the origins and interpretation of UK Biobank data. Working hours are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with expected 2 days per week in the office. Located in Greater Manchester (initially based in Stockport with a move to Manchester Science Park mid to late 2026). Is this 'you'? Reporting to the Lead Data Analyst, you will have; An MSc or higher in a numerate subject, or ability to demonstrate equivalent experience. Substantial expertise in design and development of data handling systems and processes. Significant working experience in database programming and interrogation using advanced SQL. Experience of delivering training or previous line management responsibilities. Ability to direct members of a team of data analysts to define and deliver priorities and tasks in line with appropriate standards, procedures and systems. Substantial experience in managing large and complex information resources extraction, conversion, integration and data transfer. Experience in using R for data analysis and reporting. Relevant experience of epidemiological or health research data, including the use of health records for medical research. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate ideas to technical and non-technical audiences. Highly motivated with excellent attention to detail, able to work on your own initiative and under pressure.
