Location: South Kensington – Hybrid, Fixed term. About the role: The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Resource Manager to cover a period of Maternity leave in 2025. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is seeking an opportunity to step up into a management role. Responsible for all personnel processes within the department, the Resource Manager supports our 60 line managers and 220 staff in their everyday activities. Overseeing the entire employee journey from recruitment to resignation, the postholder is integral to the smooth running of development, wellbeing and pay & progression processes. Liaising with Imperial HR teams, the postholder will establish themselves as a conduit between the needs of the department and College policies and procedures. As a central figure in the department with exposure to the entire staff community, the postholder will chair the departmental Events Group and be an active member of the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee, ensuring that all staff can engage in community building activities, collating and analysing data, recommending actions and process changes based on diversity information and staff experiences, and representing best practice in communication and transparency. Working closely with the wider operations team, the Resource Manager will ensure proper financial management of staffing budgets on research projects and recurrent accounts; acting as the approver for salary commitments and contract changes. They will also use their knowledge and skills to support the Director of Research in ensuring processes for internal research funding and offering comprehensive feedback on proposals are robust and in line with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles. What you would be doing: You will be a key member of the Department’s Professional Services management team, responsible for ensuring processes and policies are efficient and transparent. This will include: Strategic oversight of all personnel processes including recruitment, contract changes, pay review, promotions and leavers processes. Line management of the Resource Administrator, who provides operational support on daily activities in the employee lifecycle. Supporting the Director of Research in managing the Research Management Structure and internal calls procedure. Active membership of the Department EDI Committee, embedding best practice in all department policies and processes. Chair of the staff events group, ensuring the staff cohort is able to attend activities and be integral to community building initiatives. What we are looking for: You have experience working in a similar environment and have a good understanding of the challenges facing Universities in relation to staffing and research funding. You have experience liaising with central teams (such as Human Resources) to manage personnel operations. You have experienced change management procedures and can manage budgets in a research context. You have a high degree of tact and confidentiality.
