Alongside your Senior pleural specialist nurse, you will play a central role in the management of patients with pleural disease and bring a varied and valuable skillset. The specialist pleural nurse practitioner will play a key role in reducing length of stay and improving the quality of care and experience for respiratory patients. They will work across the following areas:
1. Patient assessment (including bedside thoracic ultrasound) in Accident & Emergency (A&E), Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), short stay wards, and other wards within the hospital as required.
2. Respiratory ward/unit
3. Procedural units including dedicated pleural rooms
4. Telephone/virtual clinics
5. Patient & pathway navigation including email, telephone referrals, rapid access/hotline referrals, post-procedure care
All these areas focus on early assessment and intervention in patients with pleural disease, facilitating early supported discharges, admissions and readmissions avoidance, and providing holistic care throughout the patient journey. Those taking a role as a specialist nurse will be supported by a Consultant Respiratory Physician and the clinical lead for the service.

Main duties of the job
You will be a key worker providing support on management of pleural disease and optimising options available for patients and health care professionals.
1. To work with supervision from the Band 7 to learn about the management of patients presenting with pleural disease.
2. Assist with the running of pleural clinics, assist medical staff with wound care, stitch removal, and chest drain care.
3. Order and assist with appropriate diagnostic tests.
4. Act as a resource for the management and drainage of IPC.
5. Address answerphone messages that are not appropriate for the pleural navigator.
6. Action daily triages and pleural tracking board review.
7. Complete daily nurse-led clinics.
8. To work with supervision from the Band 7 and medical staff to assess patients for IPC removal.
9. Order chest x-rays and CT scans.
10. Competently perform a surgical scrub technique.
11. Prepare the following week’s clinics including checking if CT scans have been reported, ordering chest x-rays, and rearranging appointments if necessary.
12. Assist with the management/running of consultant procedure lists, including the procedure room setup and turnover.
13. Assist within Medical thoracoscopy.
14. Work towards being Level 4 CiP Emergency Operator in Thoracic Ultrasound.

Qualifications
* Adult Registered Nurse
* Evidence of relevant post qualification study at postgraduate level or equivalent knowledge
Experience
* Minimum 3 years at Band 5
* Evidence of working with a multidisciplinary team
* Experience of working within a nurse-led service.
Skills

* Ability to work under pressure
* Provide high levels of judgement, discretion, and decision-making in clinical practice.
