This is a full-time, permanent role.
It can be primarily based either from our office in Birchwood.
This role provides an excellent opportunity within the UK’s largest independent retailer of fuels and lubricants.
The role is part of the Tax team and reports directly to the Head of Tax. Predominantly, you will have responsibility for ensuring that the company meets its compliance obligations in respect of its Indirect and Excise Duty taxes, in particular its Registered Dealers in Controlled Oils (‘RDCO’) compliance obligations (full training will be provided), which are central to the operation of the business. However, you will also have exposure to other taxes such as Corporation Tax.
Responsibilities of the Assistant Tax Manger role include:
Assisting with the preparation, review and submission of a number of tax returns. This will include VAT, Duty, RDCO and Plastic Packaging Tax
Managing indirect tax compliance risks and assuming responsibility for the continual development and improvement of processes and controls, alongside carrying out reviews and audits of current compliance processes
Identifying where training is required and helping to deliver this to the business, whether this be by preparing internally or managing the provision of this externally
Assisting the Head of Tax with tax governance, i.e. Senior Accounting Officer and maintaining the risk register
Preparing monthly corporation tax calculations
Working with external advisors on capital allowance claims and assisting with the management of the corporation tax compliance process
Being a key contact on tax queries for the business
Handling communications with HMRC
Working with the Head of Tax on integration of acquisitions and ad hoc projects as they arise
Experience desired for the position of Assistant Tax Manager are:
Qualified Accountant or Tax Advisor (part qualified will be considered)
Experience in indirect tax and duties is desirable
Experience or awareness of Corporate Tax
Critical thinking skills to interrogate data and processes to improve the control environment
Strong communications skills required to challenge and escalate issues where appropriate.
Ability to manage a variety of different projects and take ownership
Intermediate Excel skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good problem-solving skills
Ability to interact with senior management
