Senior Dental Officer - Clinical Supervisor
Job overview
The primary purpose of the role is to provide chair side clinical supervision for dental students treating patients in the Carlisle Dental Education Centre.
Principal Responsibilities (Educational)
1. Provide lectures, seminars, and tutorials in line with areas of expertise during the four-year course of study.
2. Participate in the educational assessment processes.
3. Engage in peer review and other quality and continuing educational and professional developmental activities.
4. Participate in the dental student admissions process, including face-to-face interviews.
5. Work collaboratively with the University, the Dental Education Centres in the Medical & Dental Collaborative, and other NHS and partner institutions.
6. Undertake other relevant duties commensurate with the level of the post as required.
Main Duties of the Job
The clinical supervisor will be expected to participate in the assessment of student performance related to clinical activity undertaken in the Centre. They will work collaboratively with the full-time Senior Clinical Teachers and the dental staff of the Specialist & Special Care Dental Service to enhance clinical teaching. The Clinical Supervisor will be required to screen patients and also to provide a limited amount of emergency access care.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
1. Provide clinical supervision for students treating patients in the Dental Education Centre within the Carlisle Dental Centre.
2. Be responsible for assessing and approving clinical treatment plans formulated by dental students and assist in the management of subsequent clinical care.
3. Liaise with dental staff in the Carlisle Dental Centre to screen patients suitable for treatment by dental students.
4. Maintain quality assurance of teaching and ensure parity of the dental student experience.
5. Undertake an active role in the maintenance of records related to the progression of dental students and course evaluation.
6. Engender within the dental students a professional approach to their work and develop an understanding of ethics and professionalism appropriate to contemporary practice.
Responsibilities Concomitant with the Senior Dental Officer Grade
1. Undertake oral and dental examination and diagnosis as an essential component to the assessment of patients presenting at Dental outlets to both child and adult patients.
2. Undertake dental treatment planning and patient management to deliver appropriate care for a range of patients.
3. Undertake routine dental care and exodontia on patients.
4. Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate interventions to prevent disease and promote health for individual patients.
5. Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in appropriate first-line management of such emergencies.
6. Use appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment.
7. Undertake appropriate assessment and investigations of patients to determine the need for specialist advice.
8. Communicate with patients and their families on individual clinical issues and with all members of the clinical team and peers.
9. Participate in the Dental Department’s Clinical Governance activity including Critical Incident Meetings and Clinical Audit.
10. Take responsibility for the management of the immediate clinical environment and immediate dental team.
11. Understand the legislative framework governing the delivery of oral health care in England.
12. Understand and put into practice the leadership of the immediate dental team.
13. Understand the responsibility for health and safety issues.
14. Demonstrate the application of the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry.
15. Participate in the training of individuals on a local clinical basis.
16. Maintain accurate clinical and statistical records through the use of the SOEL Health dental management program and other systems.
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of providing a wide range of dental treatments in a variety of settings.
* Experience of mentoring or work as a Clinical Supervisor/Educational Supervisor.
Knowledge
* Basic Life Support and the skills to lead a medical emergency.
* Experience of a range of teaching/training methods and styles.
Skills
* Organisational and leadership skills: ability to communicate with, support, and motivate team members.
* Able to present to small groups.
* Coaching and mentoring skills.
Qualifications
* BDS or equivalent.
* Registration with GDC.
* Postgraduate teaching qualification.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
