Job summary
The normal working day consists of covering the Paediatrics ward (C2), Neonatal unit (NNU), post-natal wards (PNW), or the Paediatrics assessment unit (PAU) as per rota allocation as a level 1 doctor (SHO level). You will also be doing out-of-hours including long days and night shifts as per rota schedules. During out of hours, you will be carrying the Tier 1 crash bleeps and attend any emergencies with senior supervision.
The Trust's busy Accident & Emergency Department is situated at this hospital, as is the seven-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit and a six-bedded Coronary Care Unit. 30,000 children are seen at A &E department each year. Excellent cover is provided by the team of intensivists
This is a busy Paediatric unit serving about 65,000 children in the borough. There are 3600 medical admissions a year. There are 2500 New Patient referrals from GPs and 6900 follow up Out Patient appointments a year. There are special interest clinics in Epilepsy, Headache, Neurodevelopment, Asthma, Diabetes, Gastroenterology and emotional and behaviour disorders.
Main duties of the job
1. Providing junior doctors cover for the HDU
2. Attending outpatient clinics and ward rounds with Consultant
3. Undertaking rounds in wards and neonatal unit
4. Admitting emergencies and booked cases and undertaking routine ward duties
5. Participation in clinical audit within the paediatric department
6. Expected to do on-call duties, including nights and weekends, participating in Tier 2 rota
7. You will be expected to liaise closely with your senior colleagues in all aspects of the patient care until you develop confidence to initiate basic care on your own accord.
