SALARY RANGE: £26,000 to £30,000 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.
CONTRACT: Full time, permanent (upon successful completion of a probationary period)
WORKING PATTERN: 37.5 hours on a 5 out of 7-day rota including some evenings and weekends. Overnight duties will be paid at an additional rate.

Overview
The Outdoor Education Chief Instructor is responsible for the effective preparation and delivery of a range of high-quality outdoor learning & residential experiences, leading a team of instructors to meet the highest standards with an emphasis on safe practice, delivering meaningful learning outcomes and ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction as measured by customer feedback, evaluations and re-bookings.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
1. To take the lead role overseeing the care of multiple customer groups, ensuring customer service is of a high standard across the centres, solving or escalating any problems as they arise.
2. To support the daily supervision of all staff present (including freelance staff) through structured and informal communication, task allocation, activity monitoring, staff feedback, quality assurance and customer engagement in line with business expectations.
3. To ensure that all staff adhere to the working practices in areas such as operating procedures, accident reporting, driving requirements and any others as identified by the business.
4. Takes a lead role in staff development through the planning and delivery of activity and operational inductions, training, and activity authorisation, relevant NGB award preparation, training and assessment, individual mentoring and comprehensive monitoring of delivery standards.
5. To ensure that all staff records for qualifications, inductions, training, monitoring and CPD are up to date and stored correctly in a digital format.
6. To personally deliver outdoor learning experiences and activities to the highest standards and to maintain, improve and share their knowledge of current national guidance and practices.
7. To ensure that all equipment is regularly inspected, maintained and recorded as such, whilst working with the OECM to make sure that the Asset Register for the centre is kept up to date.
8. To be responsible for the leadership, development, risk management and assessment of a range of outdoor activities that suit your qualifications and experience. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly, stored digitally and shared amongst the team as necessary.
9. Supports the Outdoor Education Centre Manager in all relevant compliance audits and quality inspections such as AALS, LOtC, AHOEC Gold Standards and other Centre Accreditations.
10. Work at a service-wide level to evaluate practice and ensure quality to external regulatory standards.
11. Be flexible in their availability to work including some overnights, evenings and weekends.
12. Be reflective in their practice, looking for continuous development and improvement in both their own and the centre's provision of an outdoor education experience.
13. Undertake additional duties as required, within reason and commensurate with your role, and within your areas of competency and expertise.
Person Specification – Essential
1. Have significant (typically 10 years or more) industry experience of planning and leading a range of programmes and NGB activities in a variety of settings and locations.
2. Have experience in inspiring and leading an effective team. Excellent communication skills are essential to this role.
3. Hold a wide range of high-level NGB & vocational qualifications.
4. Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to balance the needs of the customer, staff teams and business to ensure high quality and efficient delivery.
5. Be able to set and display the highest quality standards in presentation, delivery of outdoor learning and customer care for both your and your team.
6. Be current and passionate in taking part in a range of outdoor activities.
7. Excellent planning, organisational & time management skills.
8. Open, innovative, collaborative & effective in their working behaviours & underpinning values.
9. Enhanced DBS and suitable reference are required for this role.
10. Safeguarding Level 2 training or higher.
11. Hold and maintain a current First Aid certificate.
Person Specification - Desirable
1. Hold the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (PTTLS), equivalent or higher and has experience in monitoring & mentoring others with the ability to implement positive change in people’s abilities and behaviours.
2. Have experience in and the ability to deliver both in-house and NGB training/qualifications.
3. Regularly engage in and contribute towards regional and national professional development opportunities in outdoor learning and NGB activities.
4. The ability to use a variety of ICT software and hardware is essential to provide effective communication, reporting and information storage.
5. AP / LPIOL / POL aspirational.
