Role: Treasurer
Where: Home-Start South Wiltshire
When: Approximately 6 board meetings per year, during the early evening.
Time commitment: Approximate 8 hours pm, occasionally more.
This role involves leading on the financial affairs of Home-Start South Wiltshire, ensuring these are conducted within the required legal, accounting and good practice conventions. The treasurer will work in partnership with the Chair and trustees to ensure the organisation's financial viability and development.
Key tasks
* Ensure the trustee board fulfils its financial responsibilities.
* Ensure that the charity has proper systems for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting.
* Prepare management accounts and forecasts for review at Board meetings, ensuring that the board have a clear picture of the financial health of the charity.
* Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s short and long-term plans.
* Liaise with the appointed accountants who examine and approve our annual accounts; ensure the accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission on time.
* Report the financial position of the charity at the AGM.
* Oversee the payroll process and pay staff monthly salaries based on reports produced by the payroll provider.
* Manage the charity’s bank accounts.
* Provide management accounting information to staff for grant applications and grant reports.
* Do the bookkeeping for the charity OR oversee a bookkeeping service.
Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:
* Work alongside the trustee board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary.
* Ensure the charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law.
* Ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
* Help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries.
* Ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice.
* Act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role.
* Serve as an additional promoter of the charity in the community.
About you
* Commitment to the work of Home-Start.
* Experience with charity or other accounting essential.
* A finance background.
* The ability to communicate financial information effectively to Board members and staff who may have little or no financial background.
* Competent use of IT skills (Microsoft Office).

Terms of appointment
Terms of office
* Trustees are appointed for a 4-year term of office, renewal for 2 further terms to a maximum of 12 years.
* This is a voluntary position; reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Time commitment (Estimated at 8-11 hours per month)
* Attending 6 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held in person in Salisbury or Amesbury and sometimes by zoom.
* Monthly scheduled meeting with the Senior Coordinator and Business Development Officer with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.
* Attending an annual half-day strategy session.
