About the role:
Horsham District Council is looking for a Homeless Prevention Officer (Maternity Cover) to join our proactive and solution-focused housing team. We are looking for a passionate, self-motivated, and enthusiastic individual with a strong commitment to preventing homelessness and reducing the need for temporary accommodation in the district.
As a Homeless Prevention Officer (Maternity Cover), you will take the lead in supporting those at risk of homelessness, working proactively to prevent it. You will assess statutory homelessness duties under the Housing Act 1996 (as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017) and ensure the Council meets its legal obligations effectively. Your work will involve providing tailored advice and support, helping individuals find practical solutions to remain in their homes, and working closely with landlords, housing providers, and support agencies to achieve positive outcomes. You will also play an active role in assisting customers with legal processes, including court applications and hearings, to help prevent evictions where possible.
This is an exciting time to join the Council’s Housing team as we make progressive steps towards supporting local residents to prevent homelessness. The Housing team is well respected at the Council with recent growth approved to enable us to continue to meet the needs of the district’s residents through the cost-of-living crisis.
About you:
To succeed as Homeless Prevention Officer (Maternity Cover), you will be:
* Passionate about supporting vulnerable tenants and preventing homelessness.
* Self-motivated, with excellent time management and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities.
* Comfortable working in a multi-agency environment, collaborating with partners and providers to achieve the best outcomes.
* Skilled in building relationships, both with customers and external stakeholders.
* Have a full and current UK Driving Licence and access to your own vehicle.
Previous experience in housing options or homelessness prevention is desirable, but not essential. If you have experience supporting vulnerable individuals and a willingness to learn, we encourage you to apply—we provide comprehensive training to help you succeed in the role.
If you’re looking for a meaningful opportunity to make a real difference in your community, we’d love to hear from you.
To apply:
If you would like to apply for the role, we highly recommend you show clearly within the ‘Experience Section’ of the application form how you meet the essential criteria detailed within the Role Profile when applying. If you do not make this clear, it is unlikely you will be shortlisted for interview.
Internal applicants, if you would like to apply for the role, please submit an expression of interest to HR@horsham.gov.uk explaining clearly how you meet the criteria and what you feel you can bring to the role.
