Director Role at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source

About us
The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences, located at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. We produce intense neutron and muon beams that interact with materials at the atomic level, revealing structural and behavioural insights.
Our facility hosts approximately 3,000 researchers and conducts around 1,200 experiments each year, supporting a diverse scientific programme that spans blue-sky research and applied science. Our key focus areas include Energy and Clean Growth, Quantum Science, Life Science and Healthcare, and Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Testing.
We are part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), one of Europe's largest research organisations. STFC supports cutting-edge projects across various fields, from understanding the Universe to creating impact on daily life. We collaborate extensively with industry and our long-term R&D underpins sectors contributing billions of pounds annually to the UK economy.
Key Responsibilities
As Director, you will provide visible and inspiring leadership to the ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source. You will oversee the ongoing development and operation of ISIS, ensuring it remains a world-leading facility while delivering STFC's corporate vision and implementing the Delivery Plan.
You will champion equality and diversity principles, ensuring they are integrated into all aspects of our business. You will also ensure that ISIS maintains effective corporate governance, meets statutory obligations, and contributes to continuously improving STFC's overall performance.
You will work closely with other department Directors to drive our people performance and improve infrastructure standards. You will deliver and further develop world-class scientific facilities, instrumentation, and technological capability to maintain ISIS's global leadership position.
You will formulate long-term strategy defining the future capital and resource expenditure required to maintain ISIS's global leadership position. You will lead the formulation of business plans to support this investment and provide outstanding leadership to the staff of ISIS.
You will be accountable for the health and safety of ISIS staff and users. A strong and credible leader with strategic vision, leadership skills, and a proven record in science or facility delivery is essential for this role.
Requirements
A post-graduate degree in a relevant science or engineering field is desirable. Experience of working in an international context and formulation of high-value business cases are also highly desirable.
