Internal Relationships:
Responsible to Trading Manager and Executive Director.
Close working relationships with other shop managers, Volunteer Coordinator, Fundraising and other relevant Sussex Beacon staff and volunteers.
External Relationships:
Customers, donors, companies and external contractors.
Role Purpose:
To be responsible for the cost efficient and effective operation of our shops and maximise profitability to support Sussex Beacon client services. To be responsible for the provision of the highest standards of customer service and ensure the accurate and secure operation of shops finances. Motivate, train and manage the Sussex Beacon volunteer team and assume keyholder responsibilities.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
People Management:
* Ensure that the volunteers are given clear direction and support and that all volunteers work within a supportive environment.
* Ensure all volunteers are competent in undertaking their responsibilities.
* Identify the learning and development needs of the volunteer team and ensure that each individual is enabled to develop their skills.
* Utilise effective communication mechanisms to ensure that all volunteers are kept informed and involved.
* Work closely with the Trading Manager and Volunteer Coordinator in the recruitment, induction and ongoing motivation of volunteers.
Resource Management:
* Ensure that shop expenditure is kept to a minimum.
* In liaison with the Trading Manager implement commercial practices to maximise the profitability of the shops.
* Have operational responsibility for the profitable operation of the shops, ensuring that turnover targets set by the Trading Manager are met.
* Assist the Trading Manager in maximisation of volume of quality donations by using advertising and publicity.
* Ensure stock items are effectively displayed and rotated on the shop floor.
* Sort donations promptly and ensure that they are correctly distributed according to area of sale which may include eBay, Spock and Auctions.
* Assist in applying an effective pricing structure and demonstrate a good understanding of merchandising techniques.
Customer Service:
* Regularly monitor and review the display and presentation of shop floor and windows.
* Ensure that all volunteers provide a high standard of customer service.
* Encourage customers to use the comment books in order to obtain customer feedback.
* Ensure that the shop area is tidy and attractive to customers.
Leadership:
* Act as an effective role model to other managers, volunteers and customers, demonstrating the Sussex Beacon values in day to day work and interactions with others.
* Ensure a safe, secure environment for staff, volunteers and customers, liaising with the safety on all such matters.
* Comply with organisational policies and procedures.
* Comply with and ensure volunteer compliance with financial procedures and security of shop takings.
* Respond to police and Fire call outs.
* Identify own training needs in liaison with the Trading Manager.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Competencies:
* Demonstrable ability to deal effectively and courteously with all customers, companies and volunteers at all times.
* Ability to identify and meet customer expectations.
* Commercial and business acumen.
* Excellent verbal, computer and written communication skills.
* Experience of handling cash and working in a commercial customer service environment/commercial retail.
* Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
* Experience of supervising staff and volunteers in a working environment and delegating appropriately.
* Fit to undertake the requirements of the role which may include lifting.
* To be a reliable timekeeper.
* To have organisational and personal integrity.
* To be creative and innovative.
* Ability to complete paperwork accurately and on time.
* Clean driving licence.
* Responsible attitude to the use of Sussex Beacon resources.
* Supportive of the philosophy of the Sussex Beacon.
Qualifications, Competencies, Experience:
* Demonstrate experience/training/skills.
* Computer literacy and skills.
* Experience of team management in a retail or commercial environment.
* Experience of volunteer management.
* Knowledge/awareness of health and safety guidelines and training.
* Experience of adherence to policies and procedures.
* Commercial experience preferably including managing a charity shop.
General:
* Use managerial support and supervision and access appropriate training and development opportunities.
* Work as an effective team member within the shops and the wider Team Beacon.
* Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries when dealing with information pertaining to staff, clients and supporters.
* Work in accordance with Sussex Beacon policies and procedures.
* Undertake any other duties that may within reason be required from time to time.
This list is not exhaustive, and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate a flexible approach and the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the role in accordance with the needs of the Sussex Beacon.
The post holder may be required to carry out other tasks within the remit of this role and the Sussex Beacon reserves the right to adapt this job description in consultation with the post holder.
Pay: £11.44 per hour
