Job summary
This is a new substantive appointment in the Upper GI Surgery Department in the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join an ambitious team of 7 upper GI consultants to provide general and specialist upper GI care to the population of Gloucestershire and beyond. This post would be for a new colleague to join the department's cancer resection team.
The Three Counties Oesophago-Gastric Centre provides the breadth of Upper GI cancer care incorporating all aspects of oesophageal and gastric cancer management, metabolic and bariatric surgery, advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques including pioneering robotic surgeries and advanced endoscopic services including endoscopic mucosal and sub-mucosal resection, radiofrequency ablation and EUS guided interventions. It is the busiest benign biliary unit in the South-West with ample opportunity for clinical research.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of this post is to support and further develop the general upper GI service for the residents of Gloucestershire. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:
* To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
* To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
* To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
* To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
* To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services plans
* To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgical Division or the Trust.

The appointment to this post has the following aims:
* To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of Upper GI patients.
* To share in a comprehensive 1:8 rota for emergency and elective general and Upper GI care.
* To provide expertise and leadership within the Three Counties Oesophago-gastric Centre based in Gloucestershire Hospitals.
* To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests.
Clinical Responsibilities:
* To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the department.
* To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Department.
* To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff.
* To provide on call support out of hours.
* To carry out ward round.
Education and Training
* To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations.
* To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
* To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, SpRs, STs and other staff as appropriate.
To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.
Audit (as agreed with Service Line Director)
* To promote evidence-based practice.
* To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics.
Leadership and management
* To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential:
* Full General Medical Council registration.
* Consideration will be given to candidates within 2 years of their expected CCT date.
Desirable:
* Higher degree relevant to the specialty.
* Teaching qualification Management/Leadership qualification.
Clinical experience Essential:
* Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on specialist problems in Upper GI Surgery.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Personal attributes Essential:
* Communication skills, written and verbal.
* Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
