What will the apprentice be doing on site
This is a school-based role working in contact with high school students supporting their learning within a team of Learning Assistants working with students with Special Educational Needs. The successful candidate will be involved with:
1. Working with students with SEND under the direction/instruction of the Director/Deputy of Learning Support, Learning Support Operational Manager, and subject teachers.
2. Supporting access to learning for students with SEND.
3. Supervising physical and general care for students with special educational needs.
4. Providing support for the teacher in the management of students in the classroom.
5. Undertaking lunchtime duties, providing safe and structured activities to support social and emotional development.
6. Assisting with literacy and numeracy with the students.
They will also:
1. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
2. Be aware of and support difference and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
3. Attend relevant meetings as required and participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
4. Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times, including before and after school.
5. Accompany teaching staff and students in visits and out of school activities as required.
6. Undertake other similar duties and activities that fall within the grade and scope of the post, as directed by the Headteacher.
7. Establish good relationships with the students, supporting them in their personal and social needs as well as any other special requirements depending on the student’s special needs, and wherever possible make these part of their learning experience.
Are there restrictions
Candidates will need to be a level of maturity above the students. Role will not suit a school leaver.
The apprentice will need
To pass a DBS check.

The right candidate will have a caring nature and be committed to the role. They will need to have the ability to communicate clearly and tactfully using appropriate methods and an awareness of the impact of their own communication on others. They will have an ability to maintain positive relationships with all and be able to work as an effective and flexible part of a team; willing to change methods of work and routines to benefit the team. They will need a willingness to accept responsibility for their own actions; the ability to prioritise effectively, meet deadlines and accept challenges.
Essential qualities
The ideal candidate will:
1. Have a good level of literacy and numeracy.
2. Be educated to A Level standard.
3. Preferably, but not essentially, have previous experience.
4. Ideally have experience of working within a supportive environment with others with a range of specific learning difficulties.
Desirable qualities
Caring and compassionate nature. Good standard of education and knowledge.
Qualifications Required
Maths Grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent
English Grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent
3 other GCSE at C/4
Relevant information about the site
Rural location with limited public transport. Own transport desirable.
