About The Role
Thank you for your interest in Unlocked Graduates and the Data Intern role. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in using data to drive social impact, working closely with the Associate Director of Impact and Insights to showcase how Unlocked is helping to achieve our charitable mission and break cycles of reoffending.
In this role, you will develop your data gathering, analysis, and reporting skills, focusing on real-world applications linked to our theory of change. You will gain experience in analysing key performance data, learning how to translate complex information into actionable insights that staff at all levels can use to enhance their performance and decision-making. You will also deepen your understanding of how to present data effectively, learning to communicate methodologies, limitations, and recommendations clearly. Through this, you’ll build both technical expertise and a strong grasp of how data supports strategic and operational goals within a mission-driven organisation.
Because our organisation is small, the scope of work is comparatively large compared to most similar organisations. This means you will have more opportunities and get more senior experience and access to senior leaders compared to a bigger organisation.
Our main office is based in Holborn, London, and the role will entail a mix of office-based and home working. The programme is national, and some travel is required to Birmingham and Manchester.
About Unlocked
Unlocked Graduates exists to break cycles of reoffending. Currently, prison isn’t able to do this, and over 50% of prisoners released from short-term sentences reoffend within a year. Not only does this recidivism make our communities less safe, but it also represents a huge waste of potential, costing the taxpayer over £18bn every year.
Prisons must focus on giving people the support they need to focus on rehabilitation in order to reduce reoffending. We believe the transformative relationships between prison officers and prisoners are key to this. Prison officers are the agents of change within prisons, and their position on the landings means that they are the only professional able to reach all the prisoners in their care to drive change and lead rehabilitative efforts.
Since 2016, we have sought to lead this change by inspiring, recruiting and training ambitious graduates to become outstanding prison officers with the aim of creating high-performing leaders to break cycles of reoffending in prisons and throughout society. We are creating a generation of leaders who believe that rehabilitation is possible. Since we were founded, nearly 900 prison officers have been recruited by Unlocked Graduates and placed in 44 different prisons across England and Wales.
Our award-winning, two-year graduate leadership development programme has put the prison officer role on the map as a career where people can develop extraordinary leadership skills whilst making a real difference. It has raised the status of the role, and Unlocked’s programme features in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers list. We are recognised in the UK and internationally for the impact our participants are having on the landings.
