Highway Improvements Engineer (Design)
37 hours
Salary £29,777 - £42,403
County Hall, Dorchester
What’s in it for you:
We are looking for an Engineer (Design) to join our Highways Improvements Team.
The Highway Improvements Team comprises five project teams to design, project manage and deliver a programme of safe, sustainable transport infrastructure to connect our communities. The schemes range from new high quality segregated cycleways, public realm enhancements, junction improvements, signalised crossings to principal streets unlocking residential and commercial development.
Dorset Council’s Highways Service has been successful in attracting external funding for active travel and road safety based improvement schemes recently and the team is at the forefront of delivering these projects using the latest national sustainable design standards.
What you can expect to be doing:
Based in Dorchester, close to the beautiful coast and countryside, this role provides an exciting opportunity to design and deliver highway improvements schemes for the communities of Dorset.
You will be responsible for a range of Local Transport Plan (LTP) and externally funded schemes from initial concept through all stages of design, supervising construction, to post completion reviews. You will work collaboratively within a delivery team ranging from experienced engineers to trainees, supporting junior members and assisting the project team manager where required. You will utilise your civil and highway engineering design skills, working closely with a range of both internal and external partners, stakeholders and the client team to ensure high quality schemes are delivered both on time and budget.
Dorset Council offer a wide range of training and support and are embracing a hybrid working culture that allows a mix of home and office working. Occasionally you may be required to attend meetings out of hours either in person or online.
This post presents an excellent opportunity to develop and expand your existing knowledge, skills and experience within a busy highway engineering environment.
About you:
You will be educated to at least HND/HNC standard in civil engineering or a related subject and have current knowledge of highway design and construction standards, procedures and health and safety requirements. AutoCAD skills are very important. A working knowledge of Civils 3D, plus specific experience of current highway design standards would be an advantage. For appointment to the higher salary levels in this post you will need to demonstrate significant post qualification highway design experience together with strong communication and report writing skills. You will also be familiar with the roles and responsibilities under the CDM Regulations.
The role will include travelling so a driving licence is considered essential.
