An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen to work as an advanced clinical practitioner within the field of ortho-geriatrics at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. As a pivotal member of the MDT you will help improve the outcomes for elderly patients by managing hip fractures and other orthopaedic conditions.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be intrinsically part of the ortho-geriatric and rehabilitation team providing expert clinical advice to inform sound clinical judgement in the diagnosis and continuity of assessment, decision making, treatment and management through to discharge. Leading the clinical development of this specialty in partnership with the Consultant team, providing knowledge of clinical governance and educational development of others, this role is pivotal to achieving our ambition to be a centre of orthopaedic excellence.
Job responsibilities
* Organise the clinical management of individual Trauma & Orthopaedic patients who present via non-elective pathways into the Trust, utilising clinical knowledge and advanced skills to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and initiate changes where required. This will include monitoring and evaluating the responses to treatment through analysis and interpretation of clinical tests and investigations and the discharge of the patient.
* Respond to clinical situations, utilising clinical judgment and decision making to initiate appropriate interventions and treatment for patients.
* Initiate drug therapy / medication within the parameters of agreed clinical guidelines and in accordance with present legislation supply and prescribing of medicines.
* Make and receive referrals to and from other health care professionals.
* Communicate patients' conditions, verbally and in writing, to other members of the healthcare team and contribute to decision-making processes in patient management.
* Communicate on an ongoing basis with the Senior Registrar / Consultant responsible for the patient - updating him / her on changes / progress.
* Apply appropriate advanced clinical and technological skills in response to the changing needs of care and the dynamic state of healthcare services.
* Facilitate the development of clinical practice through research and education of the multidisciplinary team, by integrating theory with practice.
* Evaluate care through quality assurance initiative and assessment of clinical outcomes.
* Be an expert clinical resource for other health care practitioners.
* Participate in ward rounds, perform case presentation and contribute to the decision making process in patient management.
* Take every opportunity to promote the health of patients and initiate health education strategies as necessary.
* Participate in risk management and risk assessment working closely with other members of the clinical team.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Current registration on professional register
* MSc in Advanced Practice or equivalent study relevant to specialty
* Willingness to study towards desirable courses for the role as determined through Personal Development Reviews
* Teaching / assessing qualification
* Advanced Life Support accreditation
* Basic computer qualification such as ECDL or equivalent
Experience
* Significant clinical experience where a degree of autonomous working has been required.
* Experience of undertaking expanded roles within the speciality applied for
* Evidence of working on own initiative, managing time effectively and prioritising appropriately.
* Experience of supporting students and other clinical staff within the clinical areas.
* Experience of critically analysing published research and applying theory to practice.
* Advanced clinical skills relevant to the speciality acquired through MSc training and clinical practice.
* Demonstrable experience and involvement in clinical audit methods and quality initiatives related to clinical team activities.
* Experience at the level of ward manager or equivalent.
