Role: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Start date: Immediate (opportunity to become permanent)
Location: Newton Abbot/Totnes
Salary: Starting at £100 per day (depending on experience and qualifications)
Are you passionate about making a difference in education and looking for a fulfilling support role? Here at Long-Term Teachers, we work closely with a fantastic independent special school in Totnes, renowned for its high-quality education and pastoral care for students aged 11-19. Rated ‘good’ by Ofsted, this school places a strong emphasis on the emotional and social development of its students, helping them succeed by building trusting, supportive relationships.
About the school:
Our school is part of a nationwide service founded by experienced SEN teachers, with several independent schools and alternative provisions. The school offers tailored support to students with complex social, emotional, and behavioural needs. With a diverse curriculum that integrates both academic and vocational pathways, the school is equipped with excellent facilities such as food technology labs, motor and construction workshops, and a sports hall.
About the role:
As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), you will support the delivery of tailored learning plans, working closely with teaching staff to help students make progress in both academic and personal development. Your role will involve providing targeted support on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping students remain engaged and motivated. You’ll assist in planning and delivering lessons, ensuring that each student’s unique needs are met, and you will have the opportunity to lead sessions and contribute to the development of individual learning plans.
Given the students’ complex learning needs, including SEMH (social, emotional, and mental health) difficulties and challenging behaviour, patience, resilience, and strong behaviour management skills are key to success in this role.
Who we’re looking for:
* A passion for supporting students with SEN (Special Educational Needs) and SEMH needs
* Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) qualification or substantial experience as a Teaching Assistant with a willingness to achieve HLTA status
* GCSEs in English and Maths (grade C or above)
* Experience working with SEN students is essential
* Ability to work across different sites if required (all local)
* Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle
* Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents
* A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a supportive and dynamic environment. If you’re passionate about helping students achieve their potential and want to be part of a team that truly cares, we would love to hear from you!
