About the Role/Role Overview
As a Primary Support (SEN), you will be working closely with children with special educational needs across primary school settings. Your role will involve providing one-to-one and small group support to help children overcome barriers to learning, ensuring they can engage fully with the curriculum and develop both academically and socially. You will be an integral part of a collaborative team, helping to create an inclusive and supportive environment where each child’s individual needs are recognised and met.
Primary Support (SEN) Responsibilities:
1. Provide tailored support to children with various special educational needs, ensuring they have the tools to participate effectively in classroom activities.
2. Assist in the delivery of tailored learning activities and interventions to support academic and personal growth.
3. Implement strategies to support positive behaviour in the classroom, working in partnership with the class teacher and SEN team.
4. Help monitor and record students’ progress, providing valuable feedback to teachers and parents to ensure effective tracking of development.
5. Support the creation of a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students feel safe, valued and empowered to succeed.
6. Work closely with teaching staff, special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) and external professionals to ensure the child’s needs are met effectively.
Primary Support (SEN) Requirements:
1. A relevant qualification in supporting children with special educational needs (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent) or a background in child development or education.
2. Previous experience supporting children with special educational needs, particularly in a primary school setting, is highly desirable.
3. A genuine passion for working with children with SEN and a strong desire to make a difference in their educational journey.
4. Knowledge of different types of special educational needs, including autism, dyslexia and ADHD and how to effectively support students with these needs.
5. Excellent communication skills to work effectively with students, parents, teachers and external professionals.
6. The ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, demonstrating patience and empathy to support their emotional and academic needs.
7. Ability to collaborate effectively with other support staff and teaching professionals to achieve the best outcomes for students.
8. Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years, barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
