Our Team
You will work closely with other staff from the Technology Operations and Cyber Security team including 3rd parties to ensure the support and maintenance of the database estate is functional as required, alongside collaborating with project teams to ensure that change within the database environments is managed and controlled effectively and safely.
Following a period of training there will also be a requirement to join a 24/7 on-call rota. The role also requires occasional out of hours paid overtime.
What you’ll be doing
• Proving effective and proactive database support & maintenance of many of the bank’s critical services, which spans across multiple database technologies (predominately Oracle & SQL Server)
• Defect/Incident/Problem investigation across all environments, through to validation and resolution of database issues
• Collaboration with other teams and escalating where necessary to Lead Database Engineers to ensure operational issues are resolved within agreed SLAs
• Promoting Virgin Money by role modelling the required behaviours and contributing to the customer experience whilst being an ambassador for the brand
• Proving effective support and delivery on team objectives and departments goals
• Providing database administrative support and guidance in the shape of:
o Database lifecycle support (provisioning / deletion / patching and upgrading)
o User Access Management
o Back-up and Recovery
o Monitoring and Alerting
o Change and Incident Management
o Troubleshooting and Problem Solving
o Tuning and Optimisation
We need you to have
• Understanding and experience of database administration (Oracle and SQL Server) in a Production setting
• Ability to troubleshoot Production issues and make recommendations for system changes to resolve issues or deliver enhancements
• Experience of undertaking database builds, patching and upgrades
• Experience of High Availability and Disaster Recovery Methods including setup, troubleshooting and support
• Database Performance Tuning and Optimisation skills
• Oracle / Red Hat Linux, Windows, AIX, and Solaris Operating System experience
• Strong willingness to grow and develop as a database administrator and to be a key team player
• Ability to take ownership for your own development, including taking proactive steps to improve and maintain your skills, knowledge, and behaviours
• Display collaborative behaviours and excellent verbal / written communication skills
• Effectively manage all stakeholders and ensure that they are kept appropriately informed
• Deliver on all objectives (including functional, departmental, and personal targets/objectives) within agreed timescales and/or targets
• ITIL Service Management awareness (Incident, Change & Problem Management processes)
It’s a bonus if you have but not essential
• Experience of working with PostgreSQL
• Knowledge of setting up and maintaining Oracle Data Guard
• Experience of using Oracle Cloud Control
• Understanding of Grid Infrastructure
• Awareness of Flashback technologies
