We are looking for a Consultant Architect who is passionate about working for TfL, and has the business and technical skills to build team capability against the backdrop of complex solution delivery. You must be a critical thinker and possess the necessary leadership skills to ensure team success in the face of project technical and non-technical challenges. The post holder will be accountable for managing a team of Senior Solution Architects, ensuring architectures are developed and aligned to our project roadmaps.
This role will initially be recruited to work on the phased transition of the current Revenue Collection System to the new successor operator. Work to achieve this will commence from mid-2025. You will need extensive knowledge and experience of large scale systems integration, and of practices to manage similarly scaled architectural change. A more detailed summary of role requirements is listed below.
The role requires you to be in the office 50% of the time, the department is based at offices in North Greenwich.
Key Accountabilities
1. Accountable for management of a team of Senior Solution Architects developing highly complex multi-vendor solution architectures in support of business objectives
2. Accountable for the creation and maintenance of the Revenue Collection System Capability and Technology Roadmap, gaining the senior management approval of solution, and technical delivery plan and budget
3. Accountable for the systematic breakdown, and subsequent clear definition and allocation of work packages to multiple partners to inform budgets and plans across development, test, operational support, and infrastructure architecture
4. Accountable for the creation of high quality project solution architecture documentation describing how people, processes and technologies inter-operate to deliver Tech and Data services, such as with the Revenue Collection System
5. Collaborate across Tech and Data to challenge budgets, discover and promote new business and solution architectures that support the business plan and reduce overall total cost to operate
6. Promote architecture work to customers and key stakeholders such as the successor operator of the Revenue Collection System, establishing your team as authoritative point of contact for business and solution architecture
7. Accountable for quality assurance of all team outputs, establishing standards and building a strong and sustainable capability
Knowledge
1. Expert knowledge of large critical business and systems architectures, and modularisation techniques such as service-oriented architecture and microservices
2. Expert in mixed system development methodology environments, particularly in multi-vendor (internal and external) environments where there is a mix of agile and waterfall delivery methodologies
3. Expert in techniques to manage and resolve conflicting priorities in multi-vendor environments, ensuring balanced and timely decision making and architecture governance
4. Detailed knowledge of architecture modelling techniques including functional decomposition, use cases, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, components and interface design
5. Detailed knowledge and understanding of planning and project management tools and techniques
6. Broad knowledge of customer-facing and back office technologies and architectures, particularly those that relate to public transport operations
7. Degree in relevant subject area or TOGAF certification is desirable
Skills
1. Ability to analyse complex business scenarios, identify key decision points, opportunities, draw conclusions and produce architecture roadmaps
2. Ability to map the traceability between a business and technical requirement
3. Strong written and verbal communication skills including ability to explain complex information with senior management and directors, produce summary and feasibility reports on complex technical and business issues
Experience
1. Of graduate calibre with an excellent understanding of structured architecture approaches
2. Experience of optimising business process implementation in multi-vendor business systems
3. Proven experience of developing business and systems architecture within an overall agile development process, fully familiar with the tools and techniques used
4. A team player committed to getting the job done in a timely and quality-driven manner
5. Sound understanding of highly available large-scale business systems with specific experience of architecting cross-functional high-performance processing platforms (~100’s of transactions per second)
6. Experience of communicating end-to-end solutions to a number of different audiences
