Job Purpose:
As a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), you will be vital in supporting students with complex behavioural, emotional, and social needs. You will be responsible for managing behaviour, delivering the HLTA Role: Support SEMH students, manage behaviour, deliver Workskills BTEC, cover lessons, monitor attendance, conduct welfare checks, assist transitions, maintain records. Requirements: Behaviour management, de-escalation, safeguarding, driving license. BTEC curriculum, covering for tutors, and ensuring all necessary paperwork (behaviour plans, educational plans) is current. Additionally, you will support attendance and student engagement, conduct welfare checks on absent pupils, and assist with transitioning from outreach to in-house education.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching & Learning Support:
•Deliver the Workskills BTEC course, ensuring students engage in vocational learning and develop employability skills.
•Adapt teaching materials and approaches to support students with diverse learning needs.
•Cover lessons when tutors are absent, maintaining a structured and engaging learning environment.
•Support students in small groups or on a 1:1 basis to ensure progress.
Behaviour Management & Student Support:
•Implement and reinforce positive behaviour management strategies, de-escalating challenging situations effectively.
•Work closely with staff to create Positive behaviour plans that support emotional and behavioural development.
•Support students in developing self-regulation techniques and coping strategies.
•Provide pastoral support to students facing significant barriers to learning.
Attendance & Welfare Support:
•Monitor student attendance and engagement, working with families and external agencies to address concerns.
•Conduct welfare checks on students who are absent or disengaged.
•Support reintegration plans for students returning from exclusions or long-term absences.
Transition & Outreach Support:
•Assist students transitioning from outreach provision to in-house education, ensuring they feel supported and engaged.
•Work with external professionals (social workers, educational psychologists, CAMHS) to ensure a holistic support approach.
Administrative Responsibilities:
•Maintain up-to-date records on behaviour, attendance, and student progress.
•Ensure all paperwork related to behaviour and educational plans is accurate and regularly updated.
•Liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals to provide updates and support strategies.
Person Specification:
Essential:
•Experience working with students who display challenging behaviours and SEMH needs.
•Strong behaviour management skills with de-escalation training (e.g., Positive handling, MAPA, or equivalent).
•Experience delivering vocational courses (Workskills BTEC or similar).
•Ability to cover classes and support learning.
•Understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies.
•Driving license and access to a car
Desirable:
•HLTA qualification or equivalent experience.
•Experience in an alternative provision, PRU, or SEMH school.
•Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and restorative practices.
