The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) supports businesses to export, invest and grow, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. This support is driven by the department’s core mission: growing the economy.
We are looking for an individual with a keen interest in gathering insights from business to shape policy and decision making. This role sits in DBT’s Business Intelligence Unit (BIU), a small, inclusive team with a track record of delivering high quality outputs which support delivery of the department’s priorities.
DBT’s direct engagement with businesses provides valuable insights into business sentiment. The BIU works closely with business facing teams, including teams across the UK and overseas, drawing on that information to present insights into current economic and business activities. The team’s reporting plays a central role in informing policy and strategy development, and enabling senior officials in DBT and wider HMG to understand the UK and international business environments.
The post holder will manage and review business intelligence received from DBT’s business facing teams and wider HMG to deliver high-quality insights in a range of outputs to inform senior officials up to and including the Permanent Secretary and Secretary of State with DBT, and across HMG, including the Cabinet Office and No10.
The role would particularly suit an individual with strong analytical skills and an interest in current economic and geopolitical affairs, providing an excellent opportunity to gain a broad knowledge of international trade and business.
The team has a strong team ethos in which every member of the team is supported and develops capability to work to defined timeliness comfortably when required.
* Manage the collation and analysis of business intelligence received from teams across DBT’s network and wider HMG, identifying trends, opportunities and risks from large amounts of information.
* Take ownership for the drafting and delivery of high-quality reports, issuing clear and concise reports for senior audiences, highlighting issues of particular interest to meet HMG’s priority requirements.
* Understand and identify trends from large amounts of information within a defined deadline when required.
* Manage the delivery of multiple products and workstreams and maintain flexibility in picking up new work based on the current global situation and other issues or events to meet HMG needs.
* Build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues across DBT’s domestic and global network and other government departments and work as a collaborative member of the team, supporting colleagues and promoting a positive team culture.
* Contribute to the development of better, more efficient ways of delivering business intelligence reporting, including integration of digital technologies to improve capabilities.
* Support the delivery of business intelligence communications across the department and wider HMG to promote the team’s interests amongst internal and external stakeholders.
