The Head of Commercial and Estimating will be primarily responsible for leading and managing the estimating department, ensuring accurate and competitive project bids. You will also be responsible for managing a team of Quantity surveyors and providing support and assistance for the running of this department.
You will oversee the preparation of cost estimates for construction projects, developing strategic bid proposals, and maintaining relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors. Essential:
* Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Business Administration, or a related field.
* Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction estimating, with at least 4 years in a leadership role in some capacity
* You will have worked for a Main Contractor or Civil Engineering contractor.
* Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
* Proficient in estimating software and tools (e.g., ProEst, Bluebm, PlanSwift).
* Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
* Strong organisational and time management skills.
Desirable:
* Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator - CPE), RICS.
* Lead, mentor, and develop the estimating and commercial teams, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
* Allocate resources efficiently to meet deadlines and project requirements.
* Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
* Oversee the preparation of detailed cost estimates, including labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
* Review and analyse project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate estimates.
* Develop and implement estimating processes, standards, and best practices.
* Ensure compliance with industry regulations and company policies.
* Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement strategies for winning new business and maintaining client relationships.
* Analyse market trends, competitor activities, and client feedback to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
* Assist in the development of long-term business strategies and goals.
* Maintain and build relationships with clients, architects, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
* Participate in client meetings, presentations, and negotiations to support business development efforts.
* Ensure client satisfaction by addressing concerns and providing timely responses to inquiries.
* Develop and manage the estimating department budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
* Monitor project costs and budgets, providing regular reports to senior management.
* Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement value engineering initiatives.
* Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all estimates and proposals.
* Implement and maintain quality control procedures for the estimating department.
* Conduct post-project reviews to identify areas for improvement and lessons learned.
* Provide Directors and delivery teams with proactive commercial support and lead delivery of commercial strategies.
* Ensure effective post contract commercial management of the relevant framework, contract, or project in accordance with Wood’s commercial policies and procedures.
