The role involves designing, simulating, and testing advanced magnetic shielding solutions for cutting-edge applications, including quantum technologies and space vehicles, as part of MSL’s innovative R&D team
As a Physicist, you'll join our innovative R&D team at their state-of-the-art facility in Staplehurst, Kent. This role involves designing, simulating, and testing magnetic shielding solutions for diverse applications, including quantum technologies, space vehicles, and advanced industrial sectors. The successful candidate will also lead magnetic qualification processes, provide technical support to customers, and contribute to collaborative research projects. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, engaging in cutting-edge research, funding applications, and project management while driving technological advancements in electromagnetism and related fields.
A family run company, Magnetic Shields Limited (MSL) is the industry leader in the design and manufacture of magnetically shielded products and rooms. We are going through an exciting period of expansion and we are looking to speak to motivated and experienced applicants interested in joining our current team as a Physicist. This is an ideal role for someone with significant post qualification experience who wants to develop their career within a small team in a growing department lead by a forward-looking research and development manager.
* Design, simulation and testing of magnetic shielding for a wide range of applications from quantum technologies to space vehicles
* Magnetic qualification (QC) of final products to ensure adherence to technical specifications and writing technical reports for customers. Once familiar with magnetic testing processes, the successful candidate will oversee junior members of staff on testing responsibilities
* Communicating with customers to provide technical support, which can additionally involve site visits to commission, calibrate and troubleshoot some of the larger products
* Perform critical feasibility and fundamental design capture on collaborative multi-party research and development projects for a range of applications from space to quantum, from automotive to aerospace, from big science to semiconductor fabs
* Supporting the R&D Manager in scoping research projects, finding funding vehicles and project partners, writing collaborative grant applications and managing projects to delivery.
Minimum Requirements
* PhD, Master’s or bachelor’s degree in Physics (2:1 or above)
* At least five years of relevant post-graduate (ideally industrial) experience
* Good programming skills/experience in at least one programming language such as Python, C++, R etc
* Experience in laboratory work and processing experimental data
* Good technical documentation skills
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Experience in the fields of electromagnetism and solid state physics
* Experience in the testing and qualification of electronic circuits
* Knowledge of instrument automation and data acquisition
* Experience in the field of quantum technologies, ideally sensing
* Experience with EM modelling software (i.e. ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, Opera, etc.)
* Experience with LabVIEW programming software.
