Contract Robotics Software Engineer - up to £80 per hour, outside IR35
KO2's client is seeking an experienced contractor to work onsite in Middlewich, Cheshire for an exciting and complex robotics project.
This is an initial 6-month contract, with the potential to extend. The role offers a competitive rate of £70-£80 per hour. The project focuses on autonomous robots for hazardous and dangerous environments, with the potential to work 4 days a week.
The Role:
The project involves developing an autonomous vehicle and navigation system to map and monitor hazardous areas. The robot must autonomously navigate with high precision (1-2 inches tolerance) in environments where dust, hazards, and tight spaces present a challenge. The robot must follow a close line to perimeter walls and return to its home position once its tasks are completed.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Work on mapping for autonomous robot in hazardous environments.
2. Deliver navigation components for the autonomous system, focusing on ROS integration and mapping for autonomous robot to ensure accurate data collection and task execution.
3. Develop ROS-based systems for autonomous navigation, ensuring the robot navigates within a 1-2 inch tolerance along walls and obstacles.
4. Implement ROS to enable the robot to return to its home position once tasks are completed.
5. Create a robust mapping for autonomous robot architecture to overcome the complexities of working in a non-clean environment with tight tolerances.
6. Advise on the best platform and approach for the project, focusing on the ROS integration for precise navigation and task execution.
7. Work closely with a team to ensure the mapping for autonomous robot meets the project's needs, while also considering the limitations of the environment.
Skills Required:
1. Proven experience in ROS for robotics, particularly in autonomous navigation and mapping for autonomous robot.
2. Expertise in working with navigation components, including LIDAR, IMUs, and sensor integration for precise mapping and navigation in complex environments.
3. Strong background in ROS and development of ROS-based navigation systems.
4. Experience with mapping for autonomous robot systems in challenging environments, with a focus on tight tolerances (1-2 inches).
5. Knowledge of C++, Python, and Linux environments.
6. Experience with simulation work, ideally for autonomous robots in hazardous or confined spaces.
7. Ability to develop from a clean sheet of paper and implement robust solutions in a greenfield project.
Desirable:
1. Experience with Jetson-based platforms or similar hardware.
2. Ability to advise on the best solution for the navigation and mapping aspects of the project.
