You will have opportunity to join the highly performing stroke unit in Southend University Hospital, part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust responsible for delivering acute stroke services to the population in the Southend area.
The Stroke department at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as a regional centre of excellence, providing a caring and comprehensive service for all aspects of stroke treatment for the population of Southend and the surrounding area.
The post holder will also have the chance to work on the stroke rota with a frequency of 1:7 of early oncall shifts, late oncall shifts and weekend oncall shifts.
As a Senior Clinical Fellow for Stroke, you will cover inpatient work which will include treatment and care of patients in ASU through daily ward rounds and board rounds; active participation in weekly Multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences involving care plans, rehabilitation goals, and facilitating safe discharges.
Additionally, you will also be involved in outpatient work which includes TIA clinics and stroke clinics under consultant supervision.
Main duties of the job
1. First class opportunity to undertake clinical assessment of a suspected stroke or TIA in an adult patient referred as an emergency to hospital or in an out-patient setting.
2. Supervised learning to arrange and interpret appropriate investigations, self-sufficiency in imaging like brain scan and carotid Doppler to support or exclude diagnosis of a suspected stroke or TIA and its cause.
3. Learning to manage hyper acute treatment for stroke TIA and common stroke mimics with current and emerging interventional management of patients undergoing cerebral reperfusion therapies in acute ischaemic stroke.
4. Learning to manage immediate post-acute care of stroke including end-of-life care for stroke patients.
5. Training to manage secondary prevention strategies following stroke or TIA.
6. Contribute to post-discharge medical care, rehabilitation, and longer term social and vocational integration.
7. Initial clerking in the Acute Take, assessment, diagnosis, and management of all patients admitted.
8. Ward rounds with relevant consultants and managing of all patients on the wards, and any outlying wards.
9. Referral of patients to other specialties.
10. Necessary emergency investigation e.g., blood samples for crossmatch, X-ray etc.
11. Appropriate discharge of patients after discussion with senior team members.
12. Performing bedside practical procedures e.g., venous blood sampling, ABGs, urine catheter insertion, LP etc.
