Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service for a new full-time technical training lead role. Our team is multi-disciplinary including Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, genomic specialist technologists, laboratory support workers, trainees at all levels, administrative and IT teams.
The successful candidate will manage the laboratory training programme for both sites, covering a range of supporting, technical and biomedical roles. The training programme will need to meet all regulatory needs such as Standard ISO15189 accreditation. The post holder will work within our management team across both sites including alongside our current scientific training leads.
The post holder will work across both our current sites at Southampton General Hospital and Salisbury District hospital, we will be flexible with discussions around setting the post holders main base.
Responsibilities
* To plan, implement and support robust and equitable training for staff working within Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service.
* To provide relevant training, training plans, audit and competency assessment of support, and technical training with responsibility for the oversight and reporting of education & training KPIs.
* To support the departmental scientific training officers as needed and help organise laboratory placements for colleagues on the STP and other genomic clinical placements.
* To supervise trainee and support staff.
* To participate in general departmental management and HR procedures such as recruitment, induction, training, duty senior responsibilities and appraisal.
* To supervise the processing of pathological specimens for screening, diagnostic and monitoring purposes and provide accurate, timely and appropriate analytical data meeting the requirements of ISO 15189 and other regulatory bodies.
What Experience/skills Are Needed
* Educated to degree level and possess an appropriate BSc qualification and experience in the genomics or pathology field.
* Educated to MSc level or equivalent qualification or experience.
* Registered Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council or significant experience as a senior genetic technologist.
* Significant previous experience in a busy Pathology department as a specialist / senior level, including the ability to provide supervision / leadership and troubleshoot non-routine issues as they arise.
* Significant previous experience in supervising and supporting staff in training.

* Participation in Continuing Professional Development.
* Significant previous experience in a busy Pathology department as a specialist / senior level, including the ability to provide supervision / leadership and troubleshoot non-routine issues as they arise.
* Specialist knowledge and experience of genomics.
* Knowledge of medical laboratory quality requirements including quality systems, auditing, document control and accreditation standards.
* Significant previous experience in supervising and supporting staff in training.
Desirable criteria
* Working towards completion of, or holding a relevant training or teaching qualification.
* Management or leadership qualifications.
* Evidence of teaching, training, and presentation skills.
