The Department of Specialist Services, Specialist Laboratory Medicine Biochemistry is seeking to recruit a full-time B5 BMS to work as part of a team covering requirements in Endocrinology, Metabolic, Toxicology, Trace Metals, Biochemical Genetics, Immunosuppressants, and Screening services at St James site.
We are a team of Support Workers, Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists, and Consultants working to deliver a Specialist Biochemistry service, which is one of the most complex and busiest services in England.
We have recently implemented the WinPath Enterprise LIMs and ICE requesting.
Main Duties of the Job
This post will be a multidisciplinary permanent role within Specialist Services. This role will support the following sections: Specialist Endocrinology, Immunosuppressants, Trace Metals, Metabolic, Toxicology, and Biochemical Genetics (inherited metabolic diseases/screening) services. Support for Saturday morning Immunosuppressant services is also required.
Main duties include:
* Carry out appropriate technical laboratory procedures and tasks consistent with the post's levels of knowledge, skills, and experience.
* Carry out analysis and report results (appropriate to discipline) with appropriate escalation as required.
* Maintain appropriate records and documentation.
* Plate reading and reporting.
* Basic pipetting and specialist reagent setup.
* Dealing with telephone results inquiries.
* Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as agreed with the line manager.
This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small tools such as pipettes and handling very small volumes of samples. To achieve the required turnaround times, the work must be performed with both speed and accuracy.

BMS in Specialist Services - Block 46
* Permanent post BMS Band 5 for Specialist Services, Block 46, SJUH
* 1-year fixed term maternity cover BMS Band 5 in Screening laboratory services (Newborn and FASP) screening within Specialist Services, Block 46.
Specialist services are seeking three enthusiastic and self-motivated HPC registered Biomedical Scientists to work in the Specialist Services Lab in Block 46, part of the Specialist Laboratory Medicine Department. These posts are based at St James's University Hospital and are Band 5 roles (individuals awaiting registration portfolio assessment will be considered).
The first post is a multidisciplinary permanent role within Specialist Services, supporting the following sections: Specialist Endocrinology, Immunosuppressants, Trace Metals, Metabolic, Toxicology, and Biochemical Genetics services. This post will require support for Saturday morning Immunosuppressant services.
The second post is maternity cover in the screening laboratory, providing the regional newborn bloodspot screening and fetal anomaly screening program (FASP) services.
You will work within well-established teams including HBSWs, Specialist BMSs, and Clinical Scientists. Duties will include routine operation of HPLC, IEF, TMS, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation, training other staff, technical validation and authorization of results, stock control, and ordering supplies.
The post holder will receive full training within the relevant section and report to the Section leads. Initiative and excellent communication skills are expected as this role involves liaison with users of the service. A Registration Portfolio in Biochemistry and registration with the HPC or awaiting portfolio assessment is required.
These roles are for 37.5 hours per week, working hours 08:30 to 17:00 (flexitime system in operation).
Visits to the laboratory are recommended for questions about the services offered in Specialist Services.

Experience
Essential:
* Good working knowledge of pathology and disease processes. Post-registration laboratory experience in relevant discipline. Competent in pathology LIMS / IT systems.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of pathology disciplines other than in own area. Multidisciplinary experience. Proven ability to work unsupervised (e.g., on-call or shift).
Qualifications
Essential:
* HCPC Registration as a BMS, IBMS approved degree, CPD participation.
Desirable:
* Awaiting registration portfolio completion will be considered.
Skills & Behaviours
Essential:
* Excellent communication skills, oral and written. Computer literacy. Independent problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.
