We are currently recruiting a Designer for the upcoming R&D of The Object Lesson, an exciting piece of new writing by playwright Matthew Bulgo. In the aftermath of a school shooting, teacher Franny is pressured into making a drastic career-defining choice. It’s a decision that quickly puts strain on her relationship with partner Marcus, and forces both of them to question what it truly means to be safe and well.
The Designer will work closely with Director Sara Lloyd and priority will be given to Designers who are at the early stages of their career. Please note that the R&D is subject to Arts Council Wales funding, which we are currently waiting on.
This is an open call and, as such, we are very interested in hearing from applicants with a lived experience of racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia or any other form of discrimination. The play explores poor mental health and depression, and makes references to violence, bullying and similar subject matter which some may find triggering. More information is available on request.
Dates: 5 days from Monday 31st March to Friday 4th April 2025
Fee: £750.00 (plus expenses, as required)
We are looking for someone who:
1. Has no more than two design/assistant design credits at professional and/or fringe level.
2. Has strong abilities in model making, prop making, set dressing and scenic painting.
3. Can create and present ideas quickly in response to a design brief.
4. Can articulate how this experience will inform their artistic development.
Due to budgetary constraints, a base within 25 miles is desirable, but this can be discussed with the right candidate.
To apply, please send a document explaining why you’re interested in and suited for the role. This can be as a written document, a video, a voice note, or in a format that suits you. Please send your application to: jafariqbal7787@gmail.com. We will invite successful applicants to an informal Zoom interview on Thursday 13th February 2025.
