We are recruiting for our new purpose-built Acute Medical Unit. We invite you to join our existing dynamic expert nursing team.
This challenging fast-paced unit sees a combination of directly referred medically expected patients and those referred from our emergency department. The aim is to provide same-day emergency care inclusive of rapid diagnostics and direct medical review to facilitate discharge that day or transfer to a short-stay unit.

Our busy unit seeks an experienced, motivated, and forward-thinking nurse who is keen to embrace the challenges acute assessment nursing brings.
You will need proven ability at staff nurse level in acute medicine, up-to-date knowledge, excellent communication skills, and team-working abilities. The ideal candidate would possess good time management skills and enjoy working within a busy environment, as the unit has a high demand for admissions and discharges.
Main Duties of the Job
* Participate in the assessment of care needs of the clients and the development, implementation, and evaluation of care, promoting high standards, demonstrating compassion and patient dignity.
* Participate as a skilled member of the multi-disciplinary team.
* Work as part of the Urgent Care team, promoting good interdepartmental relationships.
* Ensure high standards of care are given in relation to agreed standards, policies, and procedures of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
* Assist in ensuring new nursing procedures, research, and initiatives are evaluated and incorporated into clinical practice where appropriate.
* Store and administer prescribed drugs safely in line with legal and Trust requirements.
* Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients' problems, producing a written plan of care as required.
* Report, document, and evaluate accidents and unit incidents via Datix reporting, informing the manager and updating the health and safety register as appropriate.
* Participate in educating staff and be an NMC Assessor for student nurses.
* Autonomously request/carry out clinical investigations to aid and confirm the diagnosis, liaising with medical colleagues to ensure deviations from expected clinical findings are monitored/reviewed, including:
o Cannulation and venepuncture
o ECG recording
o Arterial blood gas monitoring & interpretation of blood gases
About Us
AMU is a medical unit with a high demand for admissions and discharges. We have medical referrals from GPs, paramedic crews, specialty teams, and A&E. We also support the Gynaecological team. Working on the unit is both exciting and challenging, and we work closely with all MDT.
The unit admits patients under medicine via GP referrals, paramedic referrals, different specialty referrals, and medical referrals from A&E.
Job Responsibilities
* Act at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Keep up to date with clinical, professional, managerial developments, and relevant NHS initiatives.
* Maintain and improve specialist knowledge and expertise in current developments and future trends in relation to nursing practice and management.
* Maintain current registration with the NMC and comply with standards set by them.
* Demonstrate a high standard of clinical practice ensuring personal professional development. Maintain an awareness of research findings and developments in professional practice as required in accordance with prep.
* Give intravenous medication.
* Undertake clinical packages for unit, venepuncture, cannulation, ECG monitoring, etc.
* Provide support and advice to clients and relatives when faced with distressing situations.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Safe and competent practitioner aware of own limitations and needs.
* Experienced in giving IV medications.
* IT skills to include data entry, Microsoft Word, etc.
* Have coordinated previous teams.
* Have an interest in stepping up to coordinate the shift.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current NMC Pin Number.
* Proven relevant experience at Band 5.
* Evidence of continual professional development.
* Urgent care knowledge and experience.

£29,970 to £36,483 per annum pro rata.
