Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
* Ensure effective handover communication is completed on arrival with previous Operator on shift - covering SQD
* Walk the Press area to carry out 5S
* Complete cleaning schedule at the start of the shift
* Carry out guard checks
* Report any issues to the Shift Manager that affect SQD throughout the shift
* Achieve machine targets speed to be optimised where possible - raising any concerns where these cannot be achieved immediately
* Monitor and control coating quality using the appropriate documentation - raise any concerns with the Shift Manager
* Complete all related paperwork and input data onto the ERP system accurately
* Maintain good housekeeping in the coating cell and surrounding areas
* Ensure the machine and equipment is maintained to a ‘new like standard’ - raising any Engineering T Cards when necessary
* To come forward with ideas and work with the Site team to continually improve the cell and process where required
* To ensure that consideration and good relations are maintained at all times
* Fill out Production feedback forms when you incur downtime or input errors
* Support the Shift Manager in concluding internal spoilage investigations and customer complaints
* Ensure all metrics are populated on the machine
* Be proactive to ensure all inputs are available for the next job
* Ensure all standard SOPs are adhered too

* Apply press quality assurance procedures.
* Apply safe systems of work to the printing press process in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidelines. This should include identifying risks and hazards and the handling and disposal of chemicals.
* Set up finishing equipment for example, guillotines, stitching-trimming machinery, binding machinery, laminating equipment, die-cutters.
* Operate finishing equipment to apply different finishing processes, for example, varnishing, folding, embossing and debossing, foil blocking, scoring, packing, gluing, match and attach, tab and slot, sorting, banding.
* Prepare printing for next stage, including packing and wrapping.
* Apply post-press equipment maintenance techniques including cleaning and servicing.
* Apply post-press quality assurance procedures such as checking for folding accuracy, stitch alignment, foil position.
* Apply safe systems of work to the finishing process in compliance with regulations, standards and guidelines, including the handling and disposal of chemicals.

Your training plan
A full plan will be formulated to give a progressive, structured training scheme. Training modules will be issued at each stage covering all aspects of on-site training with hands-on experience. This will cover everything, including health and safety and general industrial practices. Industry-specific technical training will take place on every module, offering the apprentice a unique opportunity to learn from industry professionals. Training on each module will be to a required standard rather than a time limit.
Content:
* Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard for Print Technician/Print Operative. One day per month studying offsite workplace with Learn2print
* Allocated an assessor with regular visits to the workplace to review practical elements of the apprenticeship
