We are seeking a dedicated Publisher to oversee the maintenance and development of a portfolio of global Health Science journals across various business models and ownership types. This role is crucial for ensuring the continuous evaluation and proactive enhancement of our program's performance in alignment with Wiley and departmental objectives.
The Publisher will continuously assess the performance of the journal portfolio to ensure alignment with Wiley and departmental goals. They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve and exceed content growth objectives, including submissions, acceptances, and published articles. The role involves presenting journal development performance and strategic plans to editors and society partners, negotiating to drive desired outcomes. The Publisher must understand and communicate industry trends and their implications for Wiley and the portfolio, identifying potential opportunities. They will build and communicate compelling business cases to secure support and investment for publishing development initiatives. Additionally, the Publisher will independently manage Editor performance, regularly meeting with journal Editors to review and report on progress. Developing and maintaining a network of contacts within the Health Sciences field, the Publisher will engage consistently to gather insights and identify competitive advantages. They are also responsible for organizing, maintaining, and reporting activities to the Director and Senior Director in a timely manner.
Note: This role requires occasional travel.
How you will make an impact:
1. Develop journal portfolio to grow submissions and published output.
2. Work independently across a complex, high value/high potential list of society and proprietary, hybrid, and open access journals, to include in-person meetings.
3. Create strategic journal development plans and action activities in the annual journal development planning cycle, such as Publisher’s Reports, Editorial Board Meetings, pricing reviews, etc.
4. Develop new commercial opportunities for Wiley, including new launches and open access flips.
5. Proactively manage performance of external journal editors and editorial boards and collaborate with in-house journal editors.
6. Identify, and advocate to external partners opportunities for journal growth, development, and workflow/model optimization as aligned with objectives.
7. Build and nurture external partner relationships, working alongside Society Publishing colleagues.
What we look for:
1. Proven experience in journal publishing management, or similar.
2. Strong understanding of major industry trends and the ability to effectively communicate how they impact journal strategy and development.
3. Experience of independently managing external EiCs and Editorial Boards, including complex relationships, e.g. society and joint owned journals.
4. Proven ability to work across departments and build collaborative and highly productive relationships.
5. Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build external partner relationships and influence outcomes.
6. Creative independent problem solver, able to derive solutions using judgement and prior experience.
7. Proactive and organized, able to easily prioritize workload across a high value journal portfolio.
