Purpose of the role
The role of the Horticulture Manager is to:
1. Oversee the day-to-day production and all staff.
2. Undertake all aspects of production including preparation, growing and harvesting.
3. Finalise supermarket orders accurately (IT skills necessary)
4. Prepare orders for dispatch accurately and to a timescale.
5. Keep records of incoming/outgoing plants.
6. Forklift usage – external training provided if required
Duties
• Report to Nursery Owner daily.
• Day to day tasks may vary depending on the time of year but will always include tasks such as taking care of plants-watering/packing etc.
• Moving plants and equipment around the nursery, cleaning/greenhouse maintenance.
• Unloading and loading deliveries using forklift etc
• Unload shipments of packaged soil and other products.
• Reporting any problems or concerns back to Management.
• Managing/overseeing pest, disease and week control programmes
• Ensuring H&S and hygiene is maintained across the site and with all staff.
• Keeping records of staff hours, fridge temperatures, dispatch sheets, etc.
Other Working Conditions
• Working in varying weather conditions, wet, humid, cold, hot
• Required to bend, pull, push, stoop and stand for long periods of time.
• Required to lift/carry items.
• Working hours and workloads vary according to the crop, season and the position of the employer in the supply chain, but early starts and late finishes are common.
• Flexibility is essential at peak times, for example before bank holidays, with long hours at harvest times.
• Any other duties commensurate with your role and responsibilities.
