The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. Our work touches on most aspects of public life, from developing and drafting legislation to providing legal advice on policies and ensuring value from contracts.
Your role
In these important roles, you’ll provide specialist legal and public law advice to ministers and officials, ensuring the legal implications of policies are thoroughly considered. You'll work closely with policy leads and Parliamentary Counsel, advising Ministers as a Bill passes through Parliament.
Your responsibilities will include drafting secondary legislation and offering advisory support in the event of legal challenges, as well as advising the Secretary of State on planning decisions and judicial reviews. You’ll need to respond to world events creatively and support the Government in its accountability.
To carry out your work successfully, you’ll need to have security clearance to BPSS level. More information regarding the process can be found by clicking on the apply link.
About you
To succeed in our Directorate, you’ll have reliable judgement and an excellent appreciation of legal risk. You should possess the ability to think strategically and creatively, seeing legal issues in their wider context. We will look for:
* Public law experience, gained in private practice, academic study, or in the legal department of a public body.
* Some experience relating to energy law would be desirable.
