Climate17 are working alongside a leading owner-operator of large-scale solar PV & BESS projects in the UK.
They are looking for a Head of Construction to be the client-lead in managing the Construction project pipeline through the pre-construction and construction phases, ensuring high quality generating assets are delivered into the operating portfolio on time and on budget.
Responsibilities
1. Lead the construction function on behalf of the company and its investors (represented through project SPVs). Ensure construction projects are executed in alignment with investor objectives, adhering to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
2. Ensure hazard analysis and risk management are conducted during key project development stages, liaising with operational plants to learn and implement lessons.
3. Oversee projects from planning approval, through the EPC construction phase, to commissioning, and ensure smooth transition into the warranty period.
4. Support the investment team in managing the tender process for EPCs, ICPs, and contractors. Oversee RFQs, contract negotiations, awards, and milestone payment schedules, and manage liquidated damage claims.
5. Act as the nominated ‘Competent Person’ for CDM matters. Work closely with HSEQ, engineering, development, investment, and ESG teams to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations (e.g., H&S, planning, EPC/ICP agreements, G99).
6. Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including EPCs, contractors, DNOs, landowners, and local communities, ensuring smooth project delivery.
7. Give accurate progress reports to the investment team, senior management, and project boards, ensuring milestones and contractual terms are met. Establish and track KPIs, project budgets, and expenditure, making recommendations for adjustments where needed.
8. Assume commercial responsibility for the plant post-commissioning, ensuring EPC contractor obligations are met through to PAC. Lead the transition to the asset management team, including managing punch lists, defects, and performance-related claims.
9. Lead, recruit, and manage existing or new team members to ensure successful project delivery and high team performance.
10. Collaborate with the ESG team to implement responsible sourcing policies and manage environmental and biodiversity impacts.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
1. Degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related field.
2. Extensive experience in managing the pre-construction, EPC/construction, and early EPC warranty/post-construction phases of utility-scale solar PV, co-located PV & BESS, and standalone BESS projects, preferably in a commercial/owner’s representative context.
3. Strong technical knowledge, communication, and project management abilities. Proven track record in managing complex construction projects and multi-disciplinary teams.
4. In-depth understanding of health, safety, environmental, and planning regulations.
5. Demonstrated experience managing high-performing teams and working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. NEBOSH Construction Certificate (UK), SMSTS, CSCS qualifications current.
6. Project Management e.g. Prince2.
