The Paint Manufacturing Engineer within GMA is responsible for detail planning, development and coordination of production processes which enable production of high-quality vehicles across all models undertaken by Gordon Murray Automotive. Working together with GMAE members to continuously improve / develop manufacturing process to achieve Quality, Cost and Delivery targets. Identify unsafe operations and practices, establish safety procedures and meet environmental regulations for employees.
Key Responsibilities
* Planning, development and coordination of production processes in detail to achieve Quality, Cost and Delivery targets.
* Ownership of vehicle build sequencing through virtual, prototype and production build phases.
* Facility layout ownership and equipment scoping.
* Perform engineering analysis to reduce downtime/outages, resolve process related quality concerns and process cycle time issues including line balancing.
* Performing root cause analysis and owning resolutions.
* PFMEA & DFMEA activities.
* Plan and develop manufacturing process and in-build quality control processes by creating process operating instructions & equipment specifications.
* Working with the tooling and fixtures design engineer to produce jigs and fixtures to meet required specifications to support production build.
* Provide engineering support for production and maintenance activities to ensure Quality, Cost and Delivery targets are met.
* Approval of engineering releases and engineering change.
* Evaluate current production activities and make recommendations for improvements.
* Implement cost reduction initiatives while maintaining high quality standards.
* Working cross functionally with operations and engineering teams to achieve business goals.
* Identify unsafe operations/practices, establish safe procedures which meet regulations.
* Provides training and guidance to team members to accomplish production goals.
* Stay current with product specifications, engineering technology and production processes.
* Develop best practices to improve production capacity, quality and reliability.
* Communicate day-to-day activities with the paint team.
* Maintain good communication with Principal Manufacturing Engineer, ensuring that the priority and work plan are aligned, support budget preparation and monitor expenses and profitability.
* Able to use Paint Test equipment (hardness, film thickness, adhesion test equipment).
* Work with paint supplier on colour development and processes.
* Aid the design and install of building 3 (paint shop) to completion.
* Practical paint knowledge essential for support to production as required.
* Ownership of Paint processes.
* Reviewing/developing and accepting new model processes.
* Improving production processes to be more efficient and cost effective.
* Coordinating maintenance and repair services to keep production equipment operational.
* Aid development of decorated stock fixtures.
* Validate paint fixture designs from new model.
* Hours Per Car (HPC) data for series production.
* Ensuring plant efficiency and output targets can be achieved by line balancing/headcount allocation.
* Maintaining department to an audit standard.
* Maintaining/Calibrating and keeping log of tooling.
* Decrease faults per vehicle.
* Cost management/savings on products and suppliers.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
* Relevant manufacturing/engineering degree preferred, A Levels, ONC, City & Guilds level 3, BTec National Diploma Level 3, IVQ Technician Diploma, or equivalent NVQ level 3 qualification.
* Strong, proven and relevant automotive paint experience at an appropriate consultancy or OEM.
* Experience of full product life-cycle activities and ability to achieve Quality, Cost and Delivery targets for production.
* Experience of FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), Kaizen/A3 (continuous improvement and problem solving) process improvement and Poka Yoke (error proofing) techniques.
* Ability to create manufacturing process development plans and schedule own activities.
* Experience in managing suppliers.
* Able to use a variety of IT Packages (e.g. Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Smartsheet's, Power BI) at an advanced standard.
* Clear and effective communication skills with internal and external clients.
* Organised, persuasive, resourceful, flexible, ambitious, self-managing, passion for delivering objectives, comfortable challenging existing processes.
* Share and cascade information and communicate new processes.
