Who we are
¡Hola!
We're On the Beach. There's over 500 of us, mostly at home, and sometimes in our office in Manchester.
We send nearly two million people on holiday every year (not together) and we're expecting to get to three million pretty sharpish. Why? Because we're the only holiday company who truly gets why going on your holidays is the best week or two of the year.
With our market-leading offers, scalable, flexible and innovative technology, strong customer-value proposition and low cost base, we're challenging existing players and redefining how customers book, manage and experience their holidays.
And it doesn't stop there. With huge opportunities for growth, we're on a long-term mission to become Europe's biggest and most loved online retailer of beach holidays, so our story's only really just begun...
We're on the lookout for talented, beach-loving people to join us and contribute to the next chapter of our story. You will get to work on interesting projects and will be given the tools and autonomy to have the chance to make your impact on our growth plans.
We're a down to earth and friendly bunch, with little bureaucracy or hierarchy, and whilst we may have grown in size, we've not lost our entrepreneurial spirit. It's in our DNA.
About the role
On The Beach reimagines the package holiday shopping experience. We specialise in transforming the complexity of planning package holidays-beach getaways, city escapes and long-haul destinations-into an inspiring and seamless journey of discovery. Our platform serves as the primary gateway for travellers embarking on their package holiday journey, from choosing the destination to customising every detail, including flights, accommodation, and extras, to suit their preferences.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll join our cross-functional Shop team, working with engineers, product managers, UX designers, data analysts, user researchers, and more to help people find and book their dream holiday package. You'll play a pivotal role in driving the evolution of our platform, working at the intersection of engineering, product, and user experience.
You'll be working predominantly in our Next.js application, with opportunities to work across the full stack if desired. Our platform uses JavaScript/TypeScript, React, GraphQL, and a microservices architecture. We're big on experimentation and value customer impact over technical perfection. We move at pace and have a "fail fast" mentality, favouring data-insight over hypothesis and outcomes over output, to ensure our work is impactful and delivers value to our customers.
What you'll be doing
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will:
1. Lead projects that require the work of multiple engineers, taking full ownership from conception to delivery
2. Guide and mentor junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a collaborative team culture with a preference for pair programming and mobbing
3. Design scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems that power our shopping experience
4. Utilise AB tests and feature flags to deliver value quickly and iterate on ideas
5. Fetch data from our graph server and contribute to how we best present our inventory in a customer-friendly way
6. Balance engineering excellence with speed to market through experimentation and tactical technical debt
7. Work closely with product managers, designers, and data analysts to translate business goals into technical solutions
8. Lead inclusive, constructive dialog with team members and related teams when disagreements arise
9. Bring a system-wide view and design guidance to the team's architecture
You'll be a great addition to our team if you have the following skills, knowledge and experience
1. Strong programming skills in JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Next.js
2. Experience with GraphQL and Node.js
3. A passion for creating high-quality, user-focused digital experiences
4. Previous experience leading technical delivery in an Agile environment
5. A customer-focused mindset and ability to think from the user's perspective
6. Experience with AB testing patterns and data-driven decision making
7. Ability to break down complex problems into manageable components and prioritise effectively
8. Experience collaborating with product managers, designers, and other cross-functional teams
9. Strong communication skills to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
10. Experience working with CI/CD pipelines
11. A drive for continuous learning and keeping up with industry trends
We would also prefer
1. Experience with microservices architecture and distributed systems
2. Understanding of performance optimization, particularly web performance & RUM metrics
3. Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS)
4. E-commerce or travel industry experience
5. Experience with .NET
Ways of working
Our fulltime hours are 37.5 per week, but we don't have rigid working hours so you can find the working pattern that's right for you. We have core working hours between 10am - 4pm, so we can collaborate and enjoy the social side of work.
We also have hybrid working so we all work from home and one day a fortnight from our Aeroworks office in Manchester City Centre. You are welcome in the office at any time however, so come in and collab.
What to expect from our interview process:
Our initial interview will be on Microsoft teams and then in person, where you will meet a mixture of leaders and members of the team from across the commercial team so you get to chance to ask your questions to the people you will be working alongside.
We want to make sure everybody has the opportunity to perform at their best. If you require any reasonable adjustments during the interview process, please let the Talent team know and they will be happy to assist.
