We are looking to recruit a research assistant to work on expanding the reach and capacity of the Bath Beacon on Universal Basic Income, with particular focus on its connection to degrowth and other environmental movements. About the role We are seeking as highly motivated research assistant to join the Bath Beacon on Universal Basic Income (UBI). The UBI Beacon is a growing institutional hub of multidisciplinary basic income research, bringing together piloters, researchers and activists from around the world to share and build knowledge on UBI. The Beacon works across three thematic frontiers: UBI and Public Health, UBI, Technological Change and the Future of Work; and UBI, Climate Change, and Degrowth. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to grow the centre through building grant applications and institutional partnerships, as well as co-lead on ongoing research on sustainable welfare and UBI. The main purposes of the role are to: Work with the Beacon Team on developing a large funding application for furthering knowledge of UBI as a degrowth policy. Build institutional links between the Bath UBI Beacon and other research institutions in the UK and Europe that work on degrowth and related movements. Organise a UBI Piloters conference at Bath Manage an external evaluation of an ecologically focused UBI pilot. We therefore expect you to have advanced degree (at least master’s and ideally a PhD close to completion) in international development, along with in-depth understanding of literature, policy, and activism landscape around degrowth, sustainable welfare, and UBI. Experience working on and evaluating UBI pilots is vital, as is strong connections and experience working with the UBI community. You need experience of managing international projects and teams, organising high-level events, and working professionally in Spanish as well as English. The successful candidate will join a small team made up of academics from social policy, anthropology, and environmental politics. The role is offered on a part-time (17.5 hours per week) on a fixed term basis with an excepted end date of 19/09/2025. The candidate will report to Dr Neil Howard ( nph28bath.ac.uk ). About you An advanced degree (at least masters and ideally a close to completion PhD) in International Development In depth knowledge and research experience on Universal Basic Income in India. Experience in conducting primary research with participants from marginalised and resource-poor backgrounds. Experience of having worked on UBI pilots and researching impact Experience in conducting research with practitioners, bureaucrats and experts Experience of writing research funding proposals to academic and non-academic funders Experience in organising and managing events and conferences. Experiences of organising and managing networks of academic, civil society and political stakeholders English, Hindi, and Telugu language skills An ability to organise and prioritise own workload to meet required deadlines. Have excellent verbal, technical and written communication skills in English and Hindi. Ability and track record of presenting research to multiple audiences. Ability and track record of writing for journals and other academic and non-academic publications. Evidenced by multiple published articles in different types of outputs An ability to work in teams and collaborate on interdisciplinary research. About the Department The Bath UBI Beacon consolidates and expands the critical mass of the university’s research and expertise around unconditional basic income (UBI) and its intersections with vital contemporary public policy challenges. Our work will foster new, impactful collaborations across university departments, disciplines, and teams, as well as with external partners.
