Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £38,619 to £65,955 Contract Type: Fixed Term contract for up to 2 years Background A United States Department of Defense-funded clinical research fellow position is available within the Neuroscience and Ophthalmology research group within the School of Infection, Inflammation and Immunology, College of Medical & Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed junior doctor aiming to become a clinician-scientist neurosurgion. Real time assessment of retinal perfusion and blood flow as a surrogate measure for cerebral perfusion in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has recently been awarded $1m funding to use multimodal perfusion assessments to improve the assessment and monitoring of patients with severe traumatic brain injury, incorporating invasive neuromonitoring, retinal perfusion measures, near infra-red spectroscopy, doppler ultrasound and dark field microscopy to develop non-invasive measures of cerebral perfusion after TBI. The post-holder will contribute to running of the RETINA-TBI study along with the research team of research nurses, technicians and students, and collect, analyse and publish research data. The post holder will benefit from the infrastructure and expertise in neurotrauma as well as a track record of delivering TBI research. The post-holder will be expected to register for a higher degree and will be supported to apply for further funding. Main Duties To coordinate recruitment of patients to RETINA-TBI, including patient identification, consent and performance of trial-related procedures where relevant. To ensure study procedures are conducted as per the protocol, including insertion of invasive neuromonitoring and collection of perfusion data and fluid samples. To contribute to site file and data management under guidance of the trials coordinators and lead investigators. To carry out a literature review of the topic area. To gain sufficient research data and experience that will enable completion of a higher degree (PhD or MD). To undertake prescribed research tasks and collection of research data. To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques and methods in collaboration with colleagues. To contribute to writing bids for research grants. To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars, conferences, etc. To provide guidance to other staff and students. To contribute to the production of research reports and high impact publications. To plan and develop research contributions in the subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques. Person Specification Essential: Full General Medical Council Registration with a Licence to Practice. Understanding and experience of research methods and processes. Medical degree. Desirable: MRCS or equivalent. Experience of trauma neurosurgery. Demonstrable research experience. Understanding and experience of research methods and processes related to the study of chronic inflammatory diseases. Research publications.
