Network Officer
Hybrid – 2 days a week on site, Brighton
Are you an experienced network specialist looking for an opportunity to support and enhance a large-scale IT infrastructure? We are seeking a Network Officer to join our dynamic IT team, providing expertise in the secure operation and development of our institution’s IT network.
The Role
As a Network Officer, you will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and improving the institution’s IT networks. You will work closely with colleagues and external partners to troubleshoot technical issues, implement network upgrades, and ensure high levels of security and efficiency. Your role will also involve advising on best practices, supporting infrastructure projects, and contributing to the development of IT policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
* Monitoring, diagnosing, and resolving network issues across a multi-site enterprise environment.
* Managing network hardware, including cabling, switches, routers, and security systems.
* Providing technical advice to colleagues and external partners on network operations, fault diagnosis, and IT equipment setup.
* Ensuring network security in line with IT security policies and best practices.
* Assisting with the planning and implementation of IT infrastructure projects.
* Reviewing and improving operational processes and documentation.
* Supporting the training and mentoring of junior staff where required.
About You
We are looking for a proactive and knowledgeable IT professional with:
* A strong understanding of the OSI 7-layer model and IP protocols.
* Knowledge of LAN transmission technologies and enterprise wireless networks.
* Experience configuring network devices such as switches, routers, or firewalls.
* Practical experience with structured cabling standards and TCP/IP administration on Linux or Windows servers.
* The ability to diagnose and resolve network issues efficiently while keeping clear documentation.
* A self-motivated approach to learning and staying up to date with evolving network technologies.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms.
Qualifications & Experience
* A degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience in an IT network support role.
* Experience working in a service-oriented IT environment.
* A valid UK Category B driving licence (or equivalent) is desirable due to travel between sites.
* Ability to handle and install network equipment, with flexibility to work outside standard hours when required.
