Mortgage Underwriter
Location: Farnborough
Salary: £35,000 - £50,000 + benefits
My client based in Farnborough is seeking a Mortgage Underwriter to join their team! You will be responsible for providing vital support to all areas of the business, including criteria, property queries, title issues, tracing customers, Suspicious Activity Reports, and fraud.
Daily Duties
1. Act as a point of referral on complex cases to determine whether an application can be considered.
2. Accurately analyze and understand key elements of all mortgage applications while ensuring adherence to all policies.
3. Recommend quality cases outside policy to our funders as exceptions for approval.
4. Utilize anti-fraud systems such as CIFAS and SIRA to investigate and address information received in a timely manner.
5. Provide professional, efficient, and high-standard customer service to the business, customers, intermediaries, valuers, and solicitors.
6. Manually underwrite portfolio and complex Buy-to-Let (BTL) cases.
7. Recommend portfolio and complex BTL cases to our funder.
8. Assist in maintaining and updating the lending policy by researching and recommending policy changes.
9. Develop and maintain cooperative relationships between all internal stakeholders and investigate referrals professionally.
10. Work with fraud systems such as CIFAS, SIRA, and Hunter to mitigate potential losses.
11. Investigate suspicious alerts identified by our fraud prevention systems.
12. Exercise personal lending discretion when assessing exceptions.
13. Conduct broker reviews, liaising with sales before the removal of a broker.
14. Assist in preparing management reports, ensuring timely preparation for Exco or Credit Committee meetings.
15. Develop clear and logical step-by-step plans outlining necessary actions, timelines, and responsibilities.
Skills and Experience
1. Current or previous experience in the mortgage industry with a mortgage underwriting background and having previously held a mandate.
2. Proven ability to exercise good commercial and professional judgment.
3. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
4. Strong attention to detail.
5. Adaptability to ongoing change.
6. PC literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
7. Enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to learn and develop a career.
8. Knowledge of CIFAS and SIRA systems is beneficial but not essential.
