The role:
A USP Team Lead is responsible for managing a team to achieve the department’s goals and objectives within the Up Stream Processing (USP) development team. They take accountability for the work conducted within their team and work closely with the leadership team to establish and maintain systems that drive success. The Group Leader is an inspiration to others, motivating and developing team members and supporting their career development. They embody a continuous improvement mindset and a leadership style that empowers the team to achieve safety, quality, innovation, and delivery goals.
To be successful for this role, candidates must have people management experience and USP experience.
Key accountabilities and duties:
1. Accountable for the completion of work within the team to target KPI's. Leads Tactical Review Meetings.
2. Own, implement, improve, and maintain department operating mechanisms.
3. Identify skill and resource gaps, create job descriptions, and conduct thorough interviews to select quality candidates.
4. Ensure team members are trained and have succession plans in line with department goals.
5. Ensure team members are allocated work in line with billable hours targets and work-life balance.
6. Works with the department head to prioritise and manage the workload of the team.
7. Cascade department plans working with the individual to identify and set annual performance goals and development plans, using the SMART framework.
8. Address any gaps in staff performance promptly, by carrying out informal supportive meetings and if required creating personal improvement plans.
9. Drives a culture of continuous improvement by leading projects and coaching staff in the use of operational excellence tools.
Qualification and Skills required:
1. Bachelor's, Master's degree, or PhD in chemistry, biotechnology, life science, or related field.
2. Experience in USP is essential for this role.
3. Previous experience in managing people (within any capacity) is required for this role.
4. Proven ability to create plans, deliver own plans, and oversee those of the team using Gantt and Action log.
5. Run effective project meetings.
6. Excellent written, verbal, and listening skills. Able to run productive meetings.
7. Proactive decision-maker knows when to act, consult, or escalate.
