We are looking to recruit Phlebotomists to expand our teams at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital, Southend University Hospital and other local community clinics throughout South Essex. As a Phlebotomist you will be taking blood samples from patients for all our pathology services.
Main duties of the job
This role is ideally suited for someone who is caring, friendly and has an extremely steady hand. You will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work and communicate with a large team across multiple sections.
Our Phlebotomy services operate Monday to Sunday and bank holidays from 07.00am – 20.00pm however we are looking for candidates who can work full time, including weekends and bank holidays.
A full driving license and access to your own vehicle is essential, as you will be required to travel to a variety of community clinic locations. Previous experience is not essential as we offer full training. Successful applicants will undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Job responsibilities
Job Purpose/Summary
To be part of the medical team contributing to the clinical care of patients within the hospital and community by providing a high-quality blood collection service.
To perform, under supervision of the phlebotomy supervisor and experienced staff as designated, but after achieving competence will be expected to be able to work alone when and where required.
To follow the general policies and protocols of the department and in association with the clinical, scientific and technical staff, assist in maintaining the highest professional standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
* To take blood samples from patients, including children, according to protocols, practices and standards required by pathology, at the request of a qualified medical practitioner.
* To become familiar with all tests and precautions associated with the collection of blood samples for all pathology disciplines.
* Ensure as far as possible, that all of the information on the request form is correct and any problems are resolved in a timely manner according to the department policies and procedures.
* Know the department and trust procedure for dealing with patients who become unwell or faint during venepuncture and carry out basic life support.
* Checking and maintaining stock of consumables to ensure the smooth running of the service, including distribution of blood sampling equipment to other clinics and departments.
* Observe and maintain a clean and tidy working environment at all times.
* Provide cover for other phlebotomy staff within the hospital, in community clinics as directed by the phlebotomy supervisors.
* To know and observe procedures for high-risk patients and specimens.
* To cover weekends, Bank Holidays and extra hours, and in the event of staff shortage when requested by the phlebotomy supervisors to maintain a high-quality service.
* To participate in all relevant departmental training under qualified supervision to attain proficiency in venepuncture and associated skills.
* Liaise in a pleasant and professional manner with all trust staff including portering, transport, and outpatient staff on behalf of patients.
* Undertake routine housekeeping duties within the blood clinic, with special emphasis on observing Health & Safety to prevent contracting or spreading infection.
* Maintain a professional and helpful manner with all patients, carers and colleagues at all times.
* Any other duties commensurate with the grade and in line with requirements of this post.
* Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff.
* Demonstrate ongoing competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
No complaints are received by patients or colleagues.
Qualifications
* 5 GCSE o levels or equivalent which must include English.
* A period of vocational and practical training.
* Good communication skills, a caring and professional attitude are essential, as well as the ability to work under pressure in all areas.
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience.
* Previous phlebotomy experience in a multifunctional area.
* Experience of performing venepuncture.
* Work as part of a team, be professional at all times and be responsible for their own workload with good speed and accuracy.
* Good written and spoken English language skills.
* Able to understand and comply with detailed process and procedures.
* A caring and professional attitude always.
* Basic CPR AND First Aid.
