Oaklands center is part of Forward thinking Birmingham which is a unique, innovative community and inpatient mental health partnership. We, alongside our partners offer care pathways of mental health assessment and treatment for young people from 0-25-year-old.
At Forward Thinking Birmingham we work with children, young people and young adults who are struggling with their mental health, we aim to involve families/guardians/ carers in their care and treatment wherever possible.
Main duties of the job
1. Ensure that each referred patient and where necessary their family receives an individual specialist assessment, risk assessment and care plan and is the subject of regular evaluation which, wherever practicable is formulated in conjunction with the patient and/or their family.
2. Provide specialist interventions for referred people within a therapeutic framework, both individually, with families and in groups. Also providing advice and support for other professionals as required.
3. Provide specialist advice and support for young people and their families in times of crisis.
4. Operate in any appropriate setting including hospital, primary care facilities, residential homes, schools and units/ colleges and people's homes.
5. Provide a range of services and approaches in support of a Mental Health Nurse role ie consultation, specialist advice, clinical supervision and support to those working with children i.e. those in primary care, health visitors, school nurses, teaching staff, residential staff, social workers, youth service, etc.
6. Promote knowledge of Mental Health and reduce the impact on service users, families, professionals and the general public both formally and informally through psycho education, carer training and health promotion.
7. Participate in regular clinical and safeguarding supervision sessions with an appropriate supervisor and give clinical supervision to less senior staff where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

4. Support the Specialist Learning Disability / Mental Health nurses to prepare assessments, treatment reports and discharge summaries, in accordance with local policies.
5. Possibility of participating in the Out of Hours Team rota and the telephone out of hours rota.
6. Operate in any appropriate setting including hospital, primary care facilities, residential homes, schools and units/ colleges and peoples homes.
7. Provide a range of services and approaches in support of the Specialist Learning Disability / Mental Health Nurse role ie consultation, specialist advice, clinical supervision and support to those working with children i.e. those in primary care, health visitors, school nurses, teaching staff, residential staff, social workers, youth service, etc.
8. Promote knowledge of Mental Health (e.g. Challenging behaviour, Developmental and Neurological Disorders) and reduce the impact on service users, families, professionals and the general public both formally and informally through psycho education, carer training and health promotion.
9. Foster close working relationships with all appropriate agencies and networks in the field of Mental Health, locally, regionally and nationally.
10. Participate in regular clinical and safeguarding supervision sessions with an appropriate supervisor and give clinical supervision to less senior staff where appropriate.
11. Participate with the access centre to assess referrals as they come into the service and liaise with referring agents.
12. Actively promote service user and carer involvement in all aspects of the assessment, care planning and care delivery processes. Respecting the rights, capabilities and wishes of those individuals who access the service.
13. Advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness within the speciality of child and family learning disability service.
14. Ensure that Birmingham Child Protection guidelines and agency procedures are fully understood and adhered to by self and the nursing team.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* NVQ level 3 in childcare related subject or equivalent
* Qualifications or certificates in mental health, learning disabilities or autism related topics
* Qualifications or certificates in physical health monitoring, venepuncture, ECG
* Descalation training / breakaway training
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience of working in care settings with young people with mental health needs, autism, learning disabilities
* Ability to communicate clearly within a multidisciplinary team, with young people, their families and carers
* Awareness of child protection and safeguarding procedures
* Experience of contributing to the assessment of children and young people with LD / ASD and mental health needs
* Experience of developing person centred care plans, risk assessments and crisis planning
* Experience of working collaboratively with other agencies (eg social care, education) across community settings
Analytical and Judgement skills
* Able to write clear and concise clinical notes and complete other documentation
* Ability to use own judgement and work independently whilst seeking help, support and supervision and appropriate
* Able to make and record mental state and physical observations
* Knowledge around MHS, MCA, DoLs and any other relevant legislation
* Physical skills such as driving; typing; sitting for periods of time
* Able to write clear and concise clinical notes and complete other documentation
* Knowledge around MHS, MCA, DoLs and any other relevant legislation
* Knowledge of mental health presentations in people with learning disabilities and autism
