Main duties of the job

As an Apprentice SCPHN you will be an adult learner, this requires you to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, resilient and have an ability to manage both the academic level 7 study and the practice elements of the programme to achieve NMC SCPHN registration and a Post Graduate Diploma.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for qualified nurses or midwives who can demonstrate that they can work autonomously and collaboratively to develop skills in leading a caseload and a skill mixed team to deliver the Healthy Child programme within the diverse population of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The programme is ran over 12 months full time or 24 months part time on a fixed academic timetable. Annual leave is set by Northumbria University for the duration of the course and is not changeable. Successful applicants will be expected to be fully committed to complete the full programme. Travel from home to university will be at your own cost. Successful completion of the course may lead to substantive posts within the Newcastle 0-19 Service subject to funding.
Joint interviews will be held with Newcastle 0-19 Service and the academic leaders from Northumbria University. Shortlisted applicants will be advised of the date and times of interview via e-mail. Successful individuals will be provided with a conditional offer from Northumbria University subject to employment and academic recruitment checks and processes.

Job Purpose
* To complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme (12 months full-time/24 months part-time)
* To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Practitioner programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with the Trust and University regulations
* To ensure that by the end of the course the successful candidate has developed the knowledge base, skills and competencies to work as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within their particular area speciality
* To work with the Specialist Community Practice Supervisor to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice which will be assessed by the allocated Specialist Community Practice Assessor
* With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Supervisor to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation. To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to chosen pathway
* To develop/build on skills of team leadership and caseload management which engages enables and empowers others
* To work within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting and employee responsibilities
* To work within the NMC code

Qualifications & Education
* First level registration with the NMC (current)
* BSc (Hons) 2:2 or above, or equivalent academic credits (240)
* English and Maths at GCSE (grade 4/C or above) or equivalent e.g. functional skills level 2
* Where English is not the first language, applicants should normally possess a standard of English IELTS 7.0 or equivalent in the listening and reading sections and 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections. At least a 7.0 overall
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Effective record keeping, shows aptitude for the use of range of IT software (capable of producing reports/documents/presentations as appropriate)
* Effective organisational and time management skills
* Able to work as part of Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)
