Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent, limited duration or regular status (as needed) Ship’s Assistant Cook positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.
The Ship’s Assistant Cook is one of two food service positions on OSU operated research vessels functioning to assist the Ship’s Master in the efficient operation of the vessel by providing food and steward services to crew and scientists embarked.
Key Responsibilities
55% – Cleans galley including the brick grill, grease trap, hood vents, and steam table. Cleans mess hall (wipes tables and bulkheads, sweeps, and swabs decks). Cleans storerooms, refrigerators, freezers, and associated food preparation equipment. Washes dishes, pots, and utensils. Empties and cleans out trash and slop cans.
20% – Assists the Steward/Cook in preparing and serving meals. Makes salads, coffee, sandwiches, and other minor dishes as directed or required. Assumes cooking duties for limited periods of time in port while the Chief Cook is unavailable. Assumes cooking duties for periods at sea due to extenuating or unusual circumstances.
20% – Assists in collecting, receiving, loading, and stowing of Steward Department stores, supplies, and equipment as needed. Breaks out stores as required. Receives, stows, and issues clean linens. Collects, stows, and counts soiled linens. Cleans living quarters and heads, making up bunks as needed (typically after each cruise). During extended maintenance periods, is required to assist with light maintenance and painting on deck.
5% – Actively participates in fire, abandon ship, and man overboard drills. Fights fires, secures fire dampers, monitors fire boundaries, rescues personnel, and performs other shipboard emergency duties as required. Performs other duties as assigned for the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the ship.
What We Require
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 6 months of experience as a cook’s helper.
LICENSING / CERTIFICATIONS:
Merchant Mariner’s Credential issued by the U.S. Coast Guard;
Food Handler’s card issued by the State of Oregon, or its equivalency;
Ability to obtain a passport;
Ability to complete fire fighting training;
Successfully complete First Aid and CPR Training;
Ability to speak, read, and write English;
Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements.
What You Will Need
* Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
* Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement appropriate to this position.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The employee in this position is required to work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness. The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.
