Job summary
We are currently recruiting for Band 3 Medical Laboratory Technician to join our fast paced and dynamic Microbiology team. This role is part of a team which provides an efficient and effective Microbiology service to two general hospitals (Southend University/Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital Trusts) and local GP community. We are the first lab in the UK to be able to offer some Specialist BMS staff the opportunity to read bacterial cultures from home, utilising BD Kiestra Synapsys technology.
Main duties of the job
1. To be able to rotate through all areas of the Laboratories as required (Dependent on experience and training), to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations.
2. To prepare and process clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols.
3. To work within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of Associate Practitioners.
4. To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience.
5. To provide leadership and supervision, as directed, of trainee Medical Laboratory Assistants.
6. Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff.
7. Demonstrate ongoing competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities.
Qualifications
Essential
1. NVQ3, or equivalent, level of knowledge.
Experience
Essential
1. Working knowledge of the receipt and preparation of samples for biomedical testing.
2. Good degree of accuracy & numeracy.
3. Knowledge of computer applications in use within Pathology, particularly LIMS, Quality Management System and Procurement system.
4. Experience of working in a Biomedical laboratory.
5. Ability to communicate with a wide range of levels of staff within the laboratory and user organisations.
6. Good developed interpersonal and team working abilities.
7. Adept at majority of specimen receipt and preparation procedures.
8. Ability to manage time to best advantage.
9. Ability to adapt efficiently to change.
10. Able to plan activities within area of work.
11. High degree of dexterity required.
12. Able to concentrate for prolonged periods of time.
Desirable
1. Progress to a degree entry qualification.
